Orcs & Goblins

army value: 2,000 points (current)
background: I've always liked the orcs rules, but never found much love for the mini's. I decided to build an orc & goblin army using the LOTR models and magnetize the bases so they could mount on either square or round bases.

Jawbreakers

awards;
background: Deathbowl XIII was year of the slann and so slann teams got a magic item randomly chosen each half, which could be used in that game.  This seemed too good to pass up, and I only had a month to prepare for the tournament.  Unlike other folks, I usually prefer to use my own team - I would hate to borrow a team and damage it somehow. Therefore I needed a quick way to put together a slann team, and having never played them before I wanted to make sure I had enough of each type that whatever my final team roster ended up looking like - I would have the models required.  Since slann all have the leap and very long legs skills - I needed something that would easily convey that.  Through some discussion with a friend I decided to build a team of "daddy long legs" using polystyrene balls, flower wire for legs and googly eyes!
condition: 17/24 complete tabletop standard (71%)

Torne Bane Flaming Ears

awards;
background: Based on the abysmal '76 Buccaneers (0-14) because what other team is bound to fall apart on me than the Undead.

Torne Bane is the closest named city I found in the warhammer fluff to Tampa Bay.  Buccaneers is hard to rhyme with, so since I decided the fluff for this team is goofy, and the logo has a skull topped by fire - that Flaming Ears is both silly enough and close enough to Buccaneers.

Every player is named after a player from that year, with the correct jersey number.
condition: 18/18 models complete quality standard (100%)

Badlandz Deff Ramz

awards;
background: Based on the '99 Superbowl Champion Rams. Every player is named after a player from that year - with as close to a rhyming moniker for violence that I could find. Also stole the '99 Rams motto. Each model has the correct jersey number for the player they are based on; highlights include MVP thrower Hurt Warner and star blitzer Mash'all Folk.

This was the first thing I painted when I started gaming again, and I'm really happy with the fluff I've created for them, the logo and names/numbers - to say they've paid me back wouldn't quite be an understatement, but with heroics like this being performed there's always hope.

Karak Nhati Bengals

awards;
background: Based on the '88 Conference Champion Bengals. Every player is named after a player from that year. Each model has the correct jersey number for the player they are based on; highlights include NFL MVP / UPI AFL-AFC Player of the Year / PFWA NFL MVP and All-Pro bombardier Boomer Eziasson and 7 other pro bowlers: wide receiver Eddie Brown, tight end Rodney Holman, right guard Max Montoya, left tackle Anthony Munoz, defensive back Eric Thomas, defensive back David Fulcher, & defensive tackle Tim Krumrie.

Some history from the '88/89 Superbowl the Bengals lost;
  • Stanley Wilson was found crumpled in his hotel room bathroom with cocaine the night before the game.
  • Tim Krumrie suffered one of the most dramatic football injuries ever televised when SF's Roger Craig's knee shattered his leg, causing 2 breaks in his tibia and 1 in his fibula.
  • It was the first Superbowl to go into halftime with a tie score.
