This past Saturday I traveled out to Kitchener/Waterloo region again to support my buddy Grant who took over running the Blingtoof/Foul Frenzy tournament that was scheduled for Hamilton on the same day, but the T.O. canceled it for fear of low turnout. It was renamed to the Spiked Shoe Cup for this years iteration.

Grant recruited a lot of his new league mates, and several guys showed up from London as well and we ended up with 14 participants which is quite a good turnout. We played at the Watchtower Restaurant which is an awesome fantasy/sci-fi themed pub. He also made super thematic trophies using kids shoes with little spikes attached and spray painted appropriate colours.

For a 3 game tournament I took another new race that I wasn't super keen on - I didn't really enjoy the build - I found it difficult to make any roster I thought would be fun. So I took high elves, to get an elf team that at least got 5 skills. Also be aware every roster needed to have at least 1 goblin on it.

My roster was a thrower, 2 blitzers (frenzy & tackle), 2 catchers (block & wrestle), 5 lineelves, 3 goblins (1 guard), and 3 rerolls.

Game 1: 3-1 win vs. Devon (Orcs)

vs. Devons Orcs

This was Devon's 3rd tournament and he was talking about winning at 3rd spoon (clearly since he named his team the Doomspoons!). Despite that, he performed very well going 1-1-1 and finishing 7th which is top half!

He played a very strict cage game on his first drive - but he left one corner against a player of mine, so I was able to leverage the guard goblin's ability to dodge anywhere on a 3+ with reroll to get 2 dice against his corner and follow that up with a 2 dice against his ball carrier - knocking the ball free but unable to pick it up.

He then decided he wanted to throw a goblin for a touchdown. I managed to convince him he wanted to try and throw the goblin without moving, so he didn't need to land perfectly in the end zone to score - and he pulled it off! His blitzer picked up the ball and handed it off, and the troll moved over and tossed the goblin in a perfect spot and he casually landed and ran it in. 1-0 to the Doomspoons!

With only a few turns to score I ran 2 linemen up the sideline to form a half cage, and put my block catcher inside the cage. He marked part and lined up some tackle zones so I couldn't just run it in then tried to blitz the rear lineman, but failed something (GFI or hit can't remember). Then I blitzed his blitzer onto the sidelines and surfed him before scoring. Tie game.

Second half he kicked to me, and rolled a pitch invasion. He knocked down 7 of my 11 players. I knocked down 0 of his. It ruined a crowd surf I had lined up but fortunately for me, his kick was a touchback so my thrower got the ball. He got a 1 dice blitz against him in his next turn, but I managed to keep the ball and just ran off and threw a pass to score a 2nd touchdown. 2-1 to the high elves!

Then I got lucky with the kick and rolled a blitz. I got a blitz on the goblin near the ball and had a tackle zone where it landed. He got ahold of it, but didn't have enough resources to secure it and I managed to get ahold of it and had screened off the back from his guys on the LOS. I held it til my turn 8 and scored. 3-1 to the high elves!! He had an opportunity for TTM OTT but where he placed his goblins and where the kick landed scuppered that.

vs. Aarons Norse. My T16.

I'm pretty sure this was Aaron's first tournament. His roster was a bit unconventional (his 3 skills were pro, dump off and accurate - meanwhile his ulfwereners had no block, he took no berserkers) so all his frenzy had no block skill. That definitely burned him a bit during our game.

This was a super intense game even though we didn't do much in terms of casualties, fouls, etc. Neither of us could string more than a turn of success together all game.

Back and forth for 31 turns. First 3 turns of both halves my first dice roll failed. Both times I blitzed and needed a GFI, that failed. Succeeded the reroll just to roll double skulls on the hit. This was the second game my high elf thrower fumbled two passes.

Finally in my turn 16, the ball is on the ground and has 2 tackle zones on it. I chain-pushed to get it to be just 1, but in doing so blocked my line to the end zone with my catcher! I had to stand up and dodge my other catcher out of the way first before I picked it up (3+), 2 dodges (2+, 2+), and 2 GFI (with no rerolls for anything) to score the winning touchdown.

Game 3: 1-1 draw vs. Ted (Skaven)

vs. Teds Skaven

Also Ted's first tournament. He also showed off an Arsenal jersey to counter my Chelsea shirt when we started to play - so there was a good edge to the match from the get go.

We had sweltering heat all match long, so we swapped having drives with the man advantage. I would say he was too cavalier with his gutter runners - a bit better dice and he could have been in serious trouble. I probably got 5 or so what I would term "free" hits with my tackle or frenzy blitzer. Of course I didn't cause a casualty all game.

He was also really fortunate with his rat ogre - who only rolled wild animal twice - and twice he received a hand off or picked up the ball on a 5. I took him down the first time with a 2 die uphill with my wrestle catcher, getting both down and defender stumbles. The second time it was on a blitz where he knocked my player down and just decided to try a pick up. I had to surround him completely to force a dodge when he tried to score which fortunately he failed (and for the first time all tournament, a big guy failed his loner to reroll something against me!!!)

After a scoreless first half, I managed to score in the second, and then recover the ball after I got a perfect defence result on the kick off. I was then a long bomb away from locking up the game. No 5's for me though, for the third game in a row my thrower managed to fumble a second pass in a single game (only on a 1 thanks to Safe Throw) and he recovered it and got a gutter free. I then failed a dodge trying to blitz him, so he ran it in to score on his turn 16.

I had a chance at OTT, he rolled a blitz result - but actually made my life easier by adding guys to the LOS. Unfortunately I rolled skull/both down with my frenzy catcher and followed that with double skull on my chain pushes to see the game end at 1-1.

Round 3

So I finished in second place behind Grant (3 wins) with 2 wins and a draw.

Due to him running the tournament, Grant didn't want to accept the first place trophy so that's why you see me accepting it here. I keep listing him as the winner and he keeps listing me as the winner.

All in all a fun day at Watchtower Restaurant. Check them out if you are in the area and they are running a Blood Bowl league if you have an interest in that too.

(1/14)Just got back from Kitchener this past weekend to participate in Brewhouse Bowl III.

Astute readers (who've been running on fumes for years until my recent burst of blog motivation) may recall that I built Grant a Brewhouse Bash board and was duly rewarded with the karma required to come out on top in its inaugural year.

Well - two fantastic things came about in year three.

The first being that my constant nagging was rewarded with Grant building a simply FANTASTIC Brewhouse Bash board of his own.

The second being that I won the tournament outright again - this time the first time I've ever used a race, and that race being Vampires! Now a HUGE caveat is the build was very generous to Vampires, with them being bundled into the same tier as Stunties. So I had a very strong roster which I was extremely happy with. Big thanks to delevus, Gaixo and L3athalK for their tips and advice.

My roster was;
3 Vampires - 1) Block / Dodge 2) Block / Pro 3) Dodge / Leader
11x Thralls - 1) Wrestle 2) Guard

Scored with Chaney in first half - did a good job avoiding his trees/Grak for the most part but he still CASd a Vamp who didn't regen early on.

Got a blitz and messed it up resulted in touchback - he took off but even with six players I knocked ball loose and scooped it up and ran off with it.

I made a mistake and could have done a lot better to wrap up a win. Failed a GFI with Chaney when I could have tied up his treeman with a spare thrall. Went from potentially 2-0 to a 1-1.

Only game where the CAS really started to mount up. I think at one point I had 5 in the KO bin and 4 in the CAS box.

He tied with Kick Team Mate using Grak/Crumbleberry - glad those rules are changing!!

Lost subsequent Brewhouse round

Game 5: 2-1 win vs. Da5id (nurgle)

Scored mid-late in first half with a thrall after gazing his marking player. Got lucky on the handoff to that thrall because I forgot about disturbing presence and failed and needed a 5+ on the reroll and got it.

Stopped him scoring in first, he scored a 2 turn TD with no reroll using a pass action to his pestigor.

Got a blitz and couldn't get ahold of the ball, but took out Grotty when he threw him to try and get away and didn't move far enough.

Very nervy turn 16 touchdown. He dodged 2 bloaters to get a blitz on a blodge Vamp and got the open pow, but Vamp returned the favour and knocked ball loose and picked it up to score.

Got another cool brew themed trophy plus the usual NAF shield.

All in all a fantastic weekend. Now Grant and I are tied again for NAF shields and winning a shield the first time you use a race (3 total shields, 2 first time with a race each) - unfortunately for Grant he's played as all 24 races so he can't win any more first time playing the race :)

For this years Orion Cup - Stimme decided to steal the turncoat style from a Belgian tournament and use it here. Basically it meant you had to play using your opponents team for rounds 2 and 4.

I chose to take Chaos Pact, and I borrowed a team from Stimme the organizer.
Simply because I would only need to play 2 games with them! :)
I was hoping to get a few other teams knocked off the 24 list, unfortunately played teams I've already used a lot :(

My roster was all 6 positionals, 6 marauders, 3 rerolls and 3 FF.
I gave Block to Ogre, Juggernaut on Minotaur, Dodge on Dark Elf, Wrestle on Skaven and Sure Hands on 1 of the marauders.

Game 1 - 1-1 draw vs. Brent (Me = Chaos Pact, Him = Orc)

This was Brent's first NAF tournament, he played Orcs. (Block on Troll and 2 BOBs)
Pretty much a text book first half. I even got a CAS against a BOB with Block and KO'd some other orcs, while he couldn't break my armour. Finished HT up 1-0 not down any players at all.

Then in the second half my big guys and lack of block screwed me. I'd already managed to turn him over and get the ball with the Dark Elf, but the Ogre failed bonehead, and I turned over on a skull/both down or both down/both down by marauder even using a reroll. Just needed a push to make dodging the Elf away reasonable. (3+, 3+, 2+ with dodge) rather than (4+, 4+, 3+ ,2+).

It let Brent grab the ball and even though he failed a pass action to score, I turned over on a 2 die block with reroll again and then he picked it up and walked it in. I had 2 turns to score, but was only able to get the skaven within scoring range (I threw the goblin without the ball, unfortunately he scattered back towards the LOS and couldn't land in a tackle zone - perhaps a mistake, could have waited and thrown him last turn, but he was so aggressively positioned I knew if I had 2 guys deep, I'd be able to have a good opportunity to score)

Game 2 - 2-1 win vs. Scott (Me = his Orcs, Him = my Chaos Pact)

I was worried this tournament was taking a downward turn at the start of this game. Scott's troll (who I was controlling) was very very stupid. His blodging blitzer failed a dodge 2nd turn of the game & KO'd himself (never to return). Scott then managed a single die blitz on my ball carrier, picked up the ball and scored in his second turn of the game (after kicking to me).

Then he kicked to me again, and the ball went right off to the sidelines, I surrounded it and failed a sure hands pick up, and it squirted to the worst possible square. He blitzed a guy off and went and picked it up and ran off!! Luckily for me, he tried a pass or hand off and it failed and it let me get ahold of the ball again. After that I played more cautiously than I think I ever have and just ground upfield to tie at half time, then took the entirety of the second half to score a second.

WHEW

Game 3 - 3-0 win vs. Robert (Me = Chaos Pact, Him = Skaven)

So back to Chaos Pact. Robert really liked using his speed to re-deploy every turn, I was planning to slow grind anyways so it was very challenging to just keep maneuvering my cage around while freeing up my ball carrier all the time. He never tried anything too risky, just put a tackle zone on him by blitzing a bit of the cage free - however he did leave his gutter runners too vulnerable. Anytime I had a block available that would free my ball carrier, I used that to give me a chance to blitz his gutters with either the Mino or Ogre and they spent a lot of the game in the KO box. Scored turn 8 in the first half.

Second half, he made an aggressive push down my left hand flank, but probably set himself up for failure by leaving nobody in the backfield or around where he was planning to make a pass action. He fumbled the pass and from there I swooped in and even though I couldn't blitz his thrower off the ball, I had the area secured and then ran in with the Sure Hands marauder and grabbed the ball and dodged away. Back to the same pattern as earlier, I kept moving my cage around in whatever way let me throw a non critical blitz with a big guy against a key player - by this time both his blitzers were out of the game, so he struggled to even safely blitz the corner away any time his Rat Ogre rolled Wild Animal (2-3 times in second half). I scored on my turn 7.

Then rolled a blitz on the next kickoff. I blitzed a hole and ran a marauder up and based his thrower. Ran a big guy around his LOS and tied them up. Then he failed his first block of his turn 8, so I blitzed my guy in his end free and got him the ball and he ran it in for a bit of icing on the cake!

Game 4 - 2-1 win vs. Tim (Me = his Slann, Him = my Chaos Pact)

Game 4 and I'm undefeated - now I get to use Slann which I'd played a ton of leading up to Amorical Cup - so I was fairly confident I could at least leverage the team I had to play to my advantage. Unfortunately I felt Tim's roster left something to be desired - he took Block on both catchers where I'd really rather have had Dodge. It cost me twice early in the game, and I had to just eat dirt right after taking the ball away from him the second time because I knew I would need the last reroll I had later on for something more important.

So we went back and forth - quite a bit of failures, however they only counted against me! He had two CAS very early and each half caused at least 3 KOs. His AV dice were FIRE!!! There wasn't much I could do when needing to save that reroll for something impactful, so he ended up beating me up before handing off and taking off with his skaven. I did manage to blitz him but rolled both down and I chose not to reroll it. He could either choose wrestle and have a chance to pick up the ball freely next turn or take the both down and roll the dice. He chose wrestle and then even though he did a bunch of risky stuff first, he still stood up, grabbed the ball and scored.

So he kicked to me and I ran a loose formation up the right flank. He got a bunch of guys fronting up and protecting behind leap range so it looked tough, but I lucked out with knocking his player down and was able to run up, leap over and dodge away to score a tying touchdown - needing that reroll so it was worth it!!

Alex caught me off guard this time

Second half he kicked to me again and I just held the ball deep and let him press. Then around the middle of the half, while I was still pretty safe, I ran a blitzer deep in his end and did two GFI to get well within scoring range. He based him and felt that was enough and kept pushing, and then he got slanned! I leaped and dodged my other blitzer over his LOS, and blitzed that player off my other blitzer. Then ran and leaped my catcher into range to make a pass action, caught the ball and ran it in to score.

I kicked to him again and he failed to get the ball very far forward, so I managed to seriously tie it up and kept 2-3 tackle zones on the ball all the time - he popped it whenever I got ahold of it, but luckily it always stayed in my tackle zones so by the end of the game, I'd held him off and finished the tournament undefeated!

Unfortunately for me, even though I was tied for first place on points - I lost out to the opponent strength tiebreaker to Grant - so I finished in 2nd place.
His opponents finished 3rd, 4th, 5th & 10th whereas mine finished 5th, 8th, 9th & 10th.

You can read up about it on the website here. Basically teams of 4 entered, each coach needing to use a different race and each race having a points value. Your team could add up to 10 points, or if you wanted to compete for the equivalent of a "stunty" team trophy, your team had to add up to 6 points or less.

We chose to go this route

Me: Slann (1), Stimme: Underworld (1), Genghis: Necromantic (3), Doomington: Goblins (1)

Tier D (1 point) teams could take 4 normal and 4 double skills. Mine were as follows;

2x Catcher w Dodge

2x Catcher w Guard

Linefrog w Strip Ball

2x Linefrog w Wrestle

Kroxigor w Block

It was held at Center Of The Universe Brewing Company in Ashland, Virginia - a great choice!

He kicked. Stimme would have been proud. It was a very methodical cage downfield, where I still had 3 of my 4 rerolls left when I scored turn 6. Everything was going my way in the first half - Ken couldn't take any players off the pitch, his minotaur was rolling wild animals like crazy, etc. This probably led to me feeling the luck was on my side later in the half. He received and went down sideline. I popped the ball but got greedy and tried a pass instead of just holding out for 1-0 at HT. I fumbled the ball and it scattered out of bounds and came back in where he could pick it up and throw a pass, which he duly did needing a gfi to score. I should have just caged over the ball and ensured as much as possible going into the second half he would need to score twice if he wanted to win.

In the second half, I kicked, he received. I popped the ball but he started taking my players off the pitch. Popped it maybe 2 more times but couldn't get ahold of it. Turn 7 desperation I blitz with my krox needing 2 dodges and 2 gfi and make them all only to roll double push on the block. By the end of the game his mino had rolled wild animal on 5 of 6 blitzes.
Bit of a harsh match for English Chris sometime co-conspirator of the skulls and ones podcast. He kicked and I scored on turn 3 or 4. Then I turned him over twice in the first half to go into HT at 3-0. He averaged 2 bonehead ogres per turn the entire match, the first turn alone 4 ogres went bonehead.

Second half I kicked and he scored. Then I scored again and turned him over a final time to win 5-1. His dice were ice cold, he hit me tons just couldn't make any lasting impression. Was a great opponent kept a smile the entire time. Bought him a beer and we had some laughs

I received and unfortunately wasn't able to do much damage, although I KO'd both of his linemen with catch. I scored giving Jim 3 or 4 turns to reply in the first. Pretty sure I even got a hold of the ball again but he took down my catcher then elf'd me dodging through tackle zones 3 times to hand-off then pass to score.

In the second half I managed to score slowly pretty sure I left him less turns to score than the first half. Finally his catch linemen came back, but managed to hold him off. It's hazy now I can't recall exactly where his drive broke down.

Quite nervous coming up against a team full of block, was expecting to take a beating. Luckily I won the coin toss so got to receive and I got a few off the pitch early. Played well for my first TD. He got few hits each turn and I made a gap and ran a bunch of players through. I think he still managed to knock over the ball carrier but had enough around there to grab it and score.

Then came his curse of the butterfingers. I kicked to him, he won a reroll on the kick off, but elected not to use it on the pickup since the ball was pretty safe in his backfield. Unfortunately this sparked a string of 2 or 3 turns he could not pick up the ball, and it meant he had to rush things and had to pass the ball, I got an opportunity to intercept and duly rolled a 6 and that led to me scoring a second in the first half.

Now Scott had to rush it to score twice for a tie. He still had some butterfingers happening so it took about 3 turns. Then he kicked to me and I got it pretty deep in his backfield but not perfectly caged so he popped the ball but couldn't pick it up and I leaped over, grabbed it and scored to essentially seal the game.

This was probably both my toughest match and my best played match. Of all the other slann rosters I saw in the lead up to the tournament, I probably liked his the best.

It was probably a mistake to kick, allowing him to hit me first, even with his krox stunned by a thrown rock, he casualtied two linefrogs in the first turn forcing me to use my apo right away. I spent the entire match down players due to his dice just being on fire.

I forced him to score in turn 4 because he just didn't feel safe, so it gave me enough time to manage a late score to tie it up before half time. Unfortunately the next kick off was a riot so he got an extra turn to score, which he duly did once I failed my leap into his cage. He then also got a blitz when I had setup for a very unlikely OTT attempt.

So going into second half I wasn't feeling good about what was happening, but one thing about Slann is you never give up. So once again I got plenty of targets deep and some had to be left standing. I freed them up and I used diving catch to my advantage to keep it to a short pass attempt, leaving Manu a bit shocked. So 2-2 with 3 turns left for him to tie it up and again I left him uncomfortable enough he tried to make the ball extra secure, by handing off to a catcher inside a sideline cage with 2 guarders. Unfortunately for him it was the wrong move and he dropped the ball. I knocked down one of the catchers and KOd him. Left 2 tackle zones on the ball, however 1 was already in an opponents tackle zone. He knocked them away but failed the pickup with no rerolls and gave me the tie.
Definitely tough on Manu having been in control of the game for pretty much the entire time, but no small credit to me for just sticking with it.

This was a rough one for me. Wasn't a terrible dicing but just failures at crucial opportunities. At 1-1 in the first half receiving again I threw a pass and fumbled it. Allowing Sol to recover and score. I should have had a reroll left but had earlier taken an opportunity to get a good hit on a wardancer with 3 dice from my krox. Unfortunately didn't do anything, definitely an emotional reroll.
Second half I did fail quite a bit which was frustrating, but I'd had my share of luck too, so sometimes you have to take it on the chin. Sol got 3-1 up and twice I couldn't manage a consolation and he rounded it out with a final TD to really rub my nose in it.
So at the end of the day - we beat out Bryan Tew's Rocky Mountain Renegades team by 1 POINT to secure the Amorical Cup Championship for 2017. Thanks in large part to Alex (Stimme) going 5 wins 1 draw and coming in first (unfortunately he had to leave immediately after his game to catch his flight - which then was delayed so he could easily have stuck around) but we all finished .500 or greater and if we hadn't of finished first, we would have won the All-Amorical Cup trophy (for a 6 point team)

I did really well for hobby this year. My year end totals for painting points destroyed my target of 100 with a final total of 271. In a large part this was helped by the huge points gained for the necromunda stackable terrain - I'm not sure those points are entirely fair, considering the textured spray does a lot of the work, but then I think about all the bits of painting I did for the "metal" components, and time assembling, etc. and I think maybe there was plenty of effort, it just involved less painting.

Regardless, even discounting those points, I managed to break 100 points with painting (and the bash board) alone clocking in at 111 points, so still feel pretty pumped. I am not going to adjust the target from 100 for next year - it will be a busy one in RL so no need to set myself up for failure. I am debating making that "painting" only to try and motivate more about the pile of unpainted figures than starting new terrain projects that I've gotten pretty good at doing with minimal effort.

Summary of my 2015

I started the year finishing up a batch of 4 deadzone marauders to give myself enough painted for a strike force, space marines could proxy for enforcers and genestealers for plague so it gave me more options to have some games with buddies.

Then finished a fun old blood bowl figure to use as one of the citadel journal warhammer quest characters "ex-blood bowl player"

I finished painting and assembling my deadzone scenery - I haven't even collected the points for most of it because I do still need to add the weathering powders, but it was a fair amount of effort and I'm very pleased with it.

I built a custom brewhouse bash board to donate to my buddy Grant to use in his Brewhouse Bowl blood bowl tournament.

Was loving the krylon "make it stone" textured sprays, so I used the spare MDF from the bash board to base my old school cardstock and bulkhead "imperial firebase" terrain piece.

Once I'd decided to wait on trying to offload more space marine stuff, I got some more of my Raptor Legion painted up (some scouts and some corsairs)

Found the inspiration for stackable terrain and ended up building an entire necromunda tables worth of scenery quickly - this got donated to a buddy.

Finally got a start on some ravenwing because I got the display board laser cut. Painted up a squad and some black knights and a couple characters. Squad 1 + Techmarine. Black Knights + Chaplain.

Pretty large break for the end of the year and finally got a bunch of my blood bowl ganja girls team painted in preparation for Amazon challenge with Grant next year.

Plans for 2016

Going to try to leave this a bit loose - do what my heart fancies :)

Do weathering powders on my deadzone terrain so it is complete.

Definitely want to get another blood bowl team painted. I have my human team practically complete bar the ogre and they have been sitting around too long.

Finish? the Ravenwing - perhaps only up to 1500 points in time for Astronomi-con. Only been once before and no idea if I would enjoy a 40k tournament with how little of it I play, but I've enjoyed the ravenwing and they seem decently competitive and I have a display base already. The fact it's in Toronto means I could participate more easily.

Deadzone or Necromunda? I have a few Marauders left that could be finished up, then pick something else to begin working on.

I would also really like to get my battle systems sci-fi scenery assembled, it looks fantastic and I feel would make for great deadzone or necromunda games.

I finished these up Weds night and epoxied them to their bases so had to wait to take pics. Ended up being that I just painted up the treewoman and the prone/stunned markers. Will make a separate year end/looking forward post with my thoughts on painting this year.

5 for the treewoman and 1 each for the markers is 7 more painting points. I would have preferred to have painted the model for bertha bigfist seeing as how I'll be using the team as Amazons but I haven't been able to find it.

These have been painted for a while but I wasn't really super happy with these photos, even though I used my lightbox (or especially because I did?) but anyways I want to post about them before the year end so these will have to do.

Once I finished the roads/flocking of the display base, I felt it prudent to start gluing the bikes on to help motivate me to keep painting.... It hasn't really worked - I'd already finished the second chunk and now was just tired of doing line highlights on black. I will probably try to mix in some of the landspeeders or the nephilem I picked up to pique my interest again in the new year.

Earlier this year I completed the paint & build of my mantic deadzone scenery - and in doing so a number of thoughts came to mind. First was an interest in home built scenery again, and I started using pinterest to research and find different ideas. Second was "here's another huge box I will need to store this scenery while it's not being used". I already have four big boxes marked "necromunda" and this would be another one.

During my pinterest hunting, I spotted this from Descent of Angels - and I immediately had to run out to pick up some materials to give it a whirl. I ended up building a bunch of buildings, a bunch of walkways, some pipeline, and some scatter terrain. I also did up two boxes as stackable "tiers" for some extra elevation. Two are done the same colour as the buildings and the other two are darker without any doorways or ladders, meant to just give the table some additional height.

I used some hexagoner plastic pieces to add ladders, doors and hatches to the nesting boxes, sprayed them a rusty colour and drybrushed them silver. I also used popsicle sticks to add some detail to the nesting boxes and then sprayed them grey and used the textured spray paint I used on the brewhouse bash board. For the pipelines I just used the tubes from tinfoil, for the walkways I used plastic canvas to put some "grate" texture, for the scatter terrain I just sprayed a bunch of spare hexagoner bits and glued them onto CD's that had the texture spray.

As I built up a bundle of ideas (like the pipeline, scatter terrain, bridges/walkways, etc.) I decided I had other ideas I wanted to implement for my own "pack and play" so I ended up making this a "housewarming" gift for my buddy Mike from shiftedmatrix.com - he's spent a year renovating the old house they bought and it's very near our house. You may recall he's the one I played serious necromunda sessions with in the past so hopeful this will mean starting that up again :)

Here's the total painting points awarded for this effort. The entire thing packs up into a single medium sized plastic box for easy storage.

You might remember seeing a few of my flesh tearer khorne icon bearers or khorne death company - well I have finally gotten around to painting a couple I did for my Raptor Legion - couple extra PP.

I can see doing some blending/CSM lists using my loyalist troops - Badab War factor goes a long way - been thinking of some warp talons to double as a dark fury squad in more night lord colours, I used a bit of blue wash in place of green on both these guys.

One just had some chaos-y bits and a special weapon (magnetized) - always thought it was dumb codex marines could only get flamers, but for now I could use him to add another "blood angels assault squad" using my Raptor Legion assault marines but get an extra melta in there.

One is the dual lightning claw chosen from the dark vengeance box with a jump pack added. A useful swap for my current assault marine sergeant when points allow.
I have broken out the ravenwing into 5 chunks of effort. I still plan to put these on a display base as I think it will really make them look fantastic. Next up I have 5 ravenwing black knights and a bike mounted chaplain already on the painting table.

squad 1 (flamers)

Chunk 1 is a ravenwing squad and a bike mounted techmarine. They are complete as far as I intend to take the entire army at this point - which is one level of highlight for everything bar the bike line highlights (bikes get two) and characters will get an extra level of highlight for their "colour" (ie. red for techmarine) and coats of nuln oil which I am really pleased in terms of it's type of "dirtiness" - which suits the bikes well.
What I have left out is the headlights and screens. I think some OSL will look really good on them but want to get them to a playable point. With a new DA codex dropping sometime within a month or so, it might be nice to get a game with them or even (gasp!) take them to astronomi-con (don't mention to SWMBO!). If that doesn't happen I could also consider selling them off at that point, need to see if any final stuff should be added to the army or not.Tristan Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14542205146980688446noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658882599058000875.post-90355637329218258892015-06-10T09:44:00.002-04:002015-12-29T16:37:30.656-05:00Raptor Legion scoutsGot the Raptor Legion scouts finished up. I used Iyanden Darksun foundation on the holsters and pouches - I think it works well as a "coloured" fabric. The yellow helps to keep the number of colours down and it worked with a single wash of Devlan Mud.
Added the usual decals - I found some old one's from the imperial guard chimera sheet - they will suit for the right hand shoulder pad to identify the squad (even though I doubt I will ever do any more scouts for this chapter).
Technically they need a quick swirl of coloured wash on the bases and sealing but that will get done when the humidity drops a bit - lots of rain here the past few days! 5 more painting points - definitely on a roll this year!

After the success of the texture spray paint for the brewhouse bash board - that is what I went with for this base. At first I tried adding some volume to the base using hot glue in various places - don't do this! It didn't stick well to the MDF - it worked well enough to stick the Firebase down but any loose hot glue peeled off very easily.

Anyways - a quick hit I gave myself 5 points for this. I spent some time with a pen to colour up the cardboard and use super glue with a brush applicator to stiffen it and protect it.Tristan Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14542205146980688446noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658882599058000875.post-36898214284062405732015-06-04T22:45:00.000-04:002015-06-06T20:05:46.864-04:00Brewhouse Bowl - Result = 1st Place

As mentioned in previous post about the Brewhouse Bash board - I participated in the Brewhouse Bowl tournament last weekend. I will try to report on the bash rounds as well as the blood bowl rounds but the first bash rounds are hazy - mostly because I didn't win them :P

Grant wanted a pic as he was really happy with the bash board - here it is. Hanging up in his house now since it's built into a picture frame :)
The background: Prior to 2015 I made a pledge/bet with Grant (the tournament organizer) that we would both play Lizardmen until we won a tournament with them. I have been lax in my tournament updates - I still owe one for CCKO 2015 in which Grant beat me in game 5 to secure the tournament win his first time ever playing Lizards. When I manage to get that one written up I will link to it above.

So this would have been my second tournament with lizards - however I had already lost the pledge to Grant so I was considering a more thematic team (like Norse or Dwarves) in terms of the "boozing" fluff behind this tournament - however in the end after making dozens of rosters and each one had some funky tweak to it - I decided for probably the first time to just pick a single roster - submit it and play it without making changes leading up to the tournament. To that end I fell back to the Lizardmen because even though the skill package was not super favourable to them - the build was obvious.

I took a Kroxigor, 6 Saurus, 5 Skinks, 3 Rerolls. After the skills package I had;
2 Saurus w Block
2 Saurus w Guard
Saurus w Frenzy
Saurus w Tackle
DAY 1

Game 1 vs. Rod D 3-0 win
Rod brought an Orc roster with the chainsaw star player, his skills were below.
2 Block Black Orcs
2 Mighty Blow Black Orcs
Guard Troll
Leader Thrower

I lost the kick off and Rod chose to receive. His chainsaw player managed to stun a Saurus but next turn I KO'd him which essentially put him out of the game. A strong defensive setup meant Rod had trouble pushing forward and I eventually put enough pressure on the ball to pop it free and managed to score on my turn 8.

In the second half I caged my way upfield until I sprung a Skink loose to score a second - Rod had a few turns to try and score a consolation but his Thrower chose a very inopportune moment to go butterfingers and he failed 4 pick up rolls (2 turns each w sure hands) and a Skink ran in, scooped up the ball and even though he got knocked over he stood up - grabbed it again and scored a third.

Bash Round 1 (vs. Rod D, Mark H, Greg S, Morgan)
So blurry. Mark H won a free Fan Factor.

Game 2 vs. Rolland C 2-0 win

I am attempting to mimic Grants standard tournament photo pose. Rolland unimpressed.

Rolland also brought an Orc roster with the chainsaw star player - he took different skills though. IIRC it was;
2 Block Black Orcs
Guard Black Orc
Guard Blitzer
Strip Ball Blitzer
Tackle Blitzer

I won the coin toss but elected to kick. As previously I managed to turnover the ball and score late in the first half. In the second half it was much tighter as Rolland was able to get the ball free but in the end I managed to recover it and cage far enough that I could score my second touchdown and secure the match.

Bash Round 2 (vs. Rolland C, ?, ?, Morgan?)
So so blurry.

Game 3 vs. Mark H 2-0 win
Mark brought a pretty standard Dwarf roster - skills were;
2 Block Runners
2 Guard Blockers
Mighty Blow Trollslayer
Stand Firm Trollslayer

He won the coin toss and elected to receive. This was the 3rd match of the first day and so my recollections are a little hazy. In the first half I managed to either KO or casualty one of his runners. I think it was casualty because he never came back but Mark could have failed his recovery rolls too. The Lizardmens strength and speed were always going to be a tough ask for the Dwarves. I did a great job protecting my Skinks as usual (I find that Lizardmen are so fast I can usually defend well enough without commiting any Skinks) Then once Mark was down a player I had a definite advantage. I think it took a pickup on last turn of first half for me to score.
In the second half I definitely feel Mark went too agressive in his defence. Once he pushed up too far - I was able to break a little hole and shoot my Skinks through an deep into his end. I stalled for a turn or two forcing him to apply some pressure before scoring my second - pretty much ensuring that I had the game in the bag. He had a chance to score a consolation but it didn't come off so I finished the first day 3 and 0 with 8 touchdowns for and 0 against.

DAY 2

Bash Round 3 (vs. Matt V, Alex M, Tom R, Chris H and Grant H)

Even managed to win a bash round!

We started this beginning of day two instead of last thing day one so Grant had time to even out the participants to ensure every board got a "prize" - adding additional flavour to my bash round was Matt was the only other player with 3 wins, so we knew we were matched up the night before. We played on the same bash board (mine) and were basically duelling off to try and stop the other from getting the (much more favourable) third round prizes.

This was a crazy bash match, with everyone who died managing a 6 to ressurect to 1 wound. It went back and forth across every player in the brewhouse but finally I managed to knock out the Kroxigor of my eventual fifth round opponent Tom and score a normal skill (some gamesmanship - ie. running away meant that our round finished last so other teams got the stat increase and double skill)

Matt said he was happy enough I only got a normal skill for my skink but I was VERY happy he didn't get anything at all!
Matt brought a very strong Undead roster with Sinnedbad the stabbing/side stepping skeleton. He had been talking him up all tournament about how he was such a great piece simply due to the fact he has secret weapon and is expendable so I did everything I could to just ignore him - which worked a treat! Bar Sinnedbad it was a pretty standard Undead roster with skeletons selected over zombies and the skills package was;
2 Block Ghouls
2 Wrestle Ghouls
2 Guard Wights

Matt won the coin toss and elected to receive. For the first half I tried to defend as stoutly as possible and get some hits on his skilled players (Ghouls and Wights) - I also made what I thought was going to be a crucial error by trying to foul a stunned wrestle ghoul with a Skink and 2 assists - but I ended up rolling double 1's for the injury roll, doing no additional damage and getting my Skink ejected. I was extremely fortunate that Matt just could not penetrate the AV7 of my Skinks until the very last turn of the game so I kept my numbers. I was also fortunate that after that mistake I began to break his armour and casualtied a Ghoul, a Skeleton (no regen) and I believe KO'd one or two as well. Matt still managed a great score near the end of the first half, I tried a rush score up the sideline with my Side-Step Skink but it didn't come off.

Second half I tried the same quick score hoping to then push on for the win - I ended up blowing all my rerolls first 3 turns without any of them working!!! At that point it became a case of "all I can do is try the simplest thing and hope my dice pull it off" - which worked! So I scored a touchdown in my turn four and then setup and kicked to Matt again - now desperately hoping for a draw. He failed to pick up the ball but felt it was protected enough so he decided to keep his last reroll. This turned out to be a crucial mistake as I opened up a small hole and removed all but one tackle zone from the ball. Then I just ran in a skink, picked up the ball and dodged back behind my line and closed up my cage. At this point Matt was the one starting to hope for a draw. In a crazy last couple turns he managed to knock down my Skink and the ball bounced to his Wight who caught it. He protected him as best he could but I still had a 1 die block against him with my Frenzy Saurus (needing to GFI) and lucked out getting a pow with the first block. Still had a tackle zone on the ball but my Skink just picked it up anyways and made the successful dodge out of tackle zones to score a winner. In Matts turn 16 he finally casualtied two Skinks to even up those numbers but it was too little too late.

Tom was very disappointed right from the off - due to the tiebreakers for the tournament and the fact he could only tie my # of points with a win, he basically had no chance of winning the tournament outright. He made his case for Head to Head being the first tiebreaker loudly and vehemently as is usual for Tom. It has become a common theme for US coaches to come up - catch up to the top Canadian coach in the final round and beat them but to lose on tiebreakers. Thankfully in this case I made sure that wasn't really the result.

Tom brought Lizardmen also - I think he is preparing for the world cup (as now that I think about it - Matt must be as well??) - He didn't have a spare skink he took 4 rerolls instead. I might consider his skills package riskier but I still think my roster build was better. His skills were;
2 Block Saurus
2 Mighty Blow Saurus
Frenzy Saurus
Guard Kroxigor

I can't remember who won the coin toss but the result was the same as previous four games - I kicked allowing me to defend will full roster and work on turning over the ball. Tom in similar style to Mark H was too aggressive with his defending and his Skinks were well within blocking distance. I managed to KO two of his Saurus as well once my d6 started heating up. He did kill a Block Saurus outright in retaliation but I still managed to free up the ball and score - stalling until my turn eight to give him as few KO recovery rolls as possible.

Second half he was again very aggressive and it very nearly came off for him, but all it did was force me to commit my Skinks and I blitzed the ball free and surrounded it with 4 Skinks before picking it up and running off outside of his reach by tying up his Saurus and knocking his Skinks to the ground. I ran it in as soon as there was any pressure so I gave him a chance for a consolation but nothing transpired.

So - pretty much an outstanding weekend in terms of results. Not only did I get the sweet trophy pictured below but also tournament champion dice, the standard NAF champion trophy and some prize swag.

Currently I am in Waterloo to participate in a brand new blood bowl tournament called Brewhouse Bowl - check out the NAF forum thread if you are interested. The basic premise is they cannot afford the fees to bring the teams to play - so they offer free booze instead.

Thus - after the first three matches players from the teams participate in an old GW mini game called Brewhouse Bash - the rules for which can be found here. The winner of the bash game will get a small boost to their blood bowl team going forwards.

The TO (grant85) is a top notch guy, very supportive of everyone else's tournaments, engaged and involved in; recruitment, setup/clean up, etc. I had suggested to him to build a custom Brewhouse Bash board - he just didn't have the cycles to devote to it. So wanting to do something cool for him I decided to have a go - I wanted this to be a surprise hence this is a scheduled post for that weekend.

So first up I did this design diagram so I knew what I had to build, based on the board section graphics in the PDF.

I got some MDF from the home depot and got them to cut it to a size that would fit in a standard picture frame I bought at walmart. The MDF will give it a bit more strength because the rest is just built from cardboard, popsicle sticks and some odds and ends. You can see here how I did the grid and used hot glue to stick the stones and walls down.
Once that was done - I sprayed it with grey primer, lined the gaps with black by hand and then gave it a couple coats using a textured spray paint from Krylon. This gave it a great stone texture and was infinitely easier than using sand or flock. Then I glued in inside the picture frame.
In between while stuff was drying I was building all the features that weren't stone tiles or the walls. Some loose boxes I just cut squares of double thick card and glued cereal packet to the outside. The fermenter used floral water tube caps and some straws along with some water effects. All the wooden stuff was build with popsicle sticks, I tried to give it some height without being fully 3D. Finally I did the bbq after finding a good video about painting hot coals, I used a couple 40k biker bases glued together to make the metal "tub" part and followed the tutorial for painting.

Our house is quite dry and I am starting to find paints dried out - I didn't want this to happen with the last of my gryphonne sepia so I decided to get these guys painted sooner rather than later.

One difference from the rest of my Raptor Legion marines is these guys have some cloth - to keep a limited palette I decided to use dheneb stone for the cloth similarly to the weapons. They are also covered in holsters and pouches - this is where I need your help. Should I do those dheneb stone as well or add another colour to the mix - a leather type is my thought. Opinions?
Past few nights have been some assembly sessions and now this is the result. It's a good volume of terrain for the mat and I'm quite please with how it has turned out. You can see the flyers/posters I have glued on both inside and outside in places. I used the photos with flash as it lets you see more detail.
There is still some work to be done;

few more lamps and ladders need spraying platemail, washed and glued on - if you look closely you can see some lamps are painted "off" and another is "on".

couple more ramps and walkways need salt mask, space wolf grey - we had the temperature drop for a couple days and then mostly rain so that has been delayed - not much effort required.

touch ups on railings - the hazard stripes need cleaning up.

weather all the pieces with powders - this is the big one, I plan to wait for nicer weather as I don't want all my work getting rubbed off before the final stage

seal everything!

Getting these finished has really sparked my mind in terms of other terrain - though I will be getting brush to fig first a bit.
In addition to the below we also played some Dominion and lots of the Resistance.
Finally got a game of deadzone in against Dan who pledged into the kickstarter but hasn't had a game yet. He played enforcers with some proxy marines of mine and I played with my painted marauders.

He caught onto the rules pretty quick (those short/long action flowcharts really help) and due to some epic poor rolling from my goblin sniper (3 successes on 9 dice! TWICE) and a mistake I made with my mawbeast (not enraged before attacking) I lost the chance to really hurt his team, and once he figured out the differences between shoot and blaze he was much more effective in his decisions - he smoked me 11VP or something to 0.
March 14/15 saw 22 blood bowl coaches descend on Toronto again for the annual Canadian Open tournament. I was hoping to improve upon last years numbers and just needed one of several locals who had expressed interest to show up (as the 22 did not include my Odd Man Out) but real life prevailed over Nuffle yet again and so no new record was achieved.

I was really pleased that of 5 new/RE-newed NAF members who came out to participate last year - 4 of them showed up again this year. They continue to enjoy themselves and it sounds like most will continue to return and potentially be involved in more tournaments in the future.

Here are the links to the results and photos on the NAFCanada.ca website. Be sure to check them out and also check out some of the new Canadian Tournaments starting up this year, including a new tournament in May called Brewhouse Bash and a new "woodstock" style camping tournament in July the Border Princes Summer Festival to replace the old Lakeside Cup.
All in all another successful year - the legacy trophy is currently being put together I hope to have it soon and will post some pics when I do.
If you haven't yet - consider coming to the Canadian Open next year for a great weekend of blood bowl. We played a ton of other games Friday/Saturday night as well I will post up some photos from that too.

Both Paul and Axtlinge voted for this figure, so I started working on him, I chose a generic yellow and blue colour scheme to match the Reikland Reavers without any of the icons as he's no longer an official player.
This represents 5 painting points (2 for the captain, 1 for each of the others) the captain has some significant highlights compared to the commandos, and the sniper has some extra detailing to make his cloak look like it was selected to match my deadzone terrain (unlike their generic strike team camouflage)
I had to add a piece of terrain snipped off a door underneath his right foot to keep him balanced on the clear base. The dullcote didn't seem to do as good a job on these guys I may try to protect the clear base and give them another spritz.
Love this guys head with the skull plate, the two guns do nothing in game terms he just looks bad ass. He's got long sleeves so not much skin, but I stuck with doing highlights using yellow directly on the goblin green skin and it works great IMO.
Do like these guys, they are potentially powerful in the game but very unreliable due to their poor shooting skill. Was pretty happy with how the cloak came out so it looks like he equipped himself for my terrain.

Between the last four and these four I have enough for a legit strike team while adding a few things like extra ammo, etc. I will probably continue to try and paint up more of these guys in batches of four until they are all finished rather than switching gears to other factions. I have another commando, another mawbeast, some more snipers and the pyro still to go. Was planning to try and pick up an old AoBR ork warboss from the old GW 40K box since I like it better than the marauder warlord figure.Tristan Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14542205146980688446noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658882599058000875.post-81962213724815020942015-01-28T21:16:00.000-05:002015-06-04T22:37:17.960-04:00CCKO 2015 - Result: 4th/14 (and Best Defence)This write up is late - once posted I'm gonna update the date back to an appropriate time frame. The story behind this tournament is Grant and I decided we would both play Lizardmen this year to see who could win a tournament first - read on!

CCKO is the first tournament of the year - hosted in Ottawa. Here is a link to the NAF forum thread.

My build was pretty standard for Lizardmen at 1.1m - Kroxigor, 6 Saurus, 5 Skinks, 3 Rerolls. The skill pack gave us 5 normal skills and then in the middle there was a skill draft. I have waited too long to write this up - I do not remember much of the games.
To start I took the following;
2 Block Saurus
2 Guard Saurus
Tackle Saurus

DAY 1

Game 1 vs. Mark H 0-2 loss

First game ever with Lizardmen bar a few rounds against the PC in cyanide. Mark is a skilled Chaos Dwarf coach and as usual his Bull Centaurs do most of the heavy lifting. I don't think he even had a Minotaur. Mark won the casualty count too 2-0.

Game 2 vs. Mark D 2-1 win

I've played against Mark as Norse once before and came out on the losing side. It was nice to reverse that. I seem to recall his Yeti going wild animal a lot. We both got 2 casualties, I think I got a few KOs as well.

Game 3 vs. Graham 1-0 win

Graham was a new player - so this was his third game ever. He very quickly had picked up the defensive aspect but struggled with moving his cage forward and thus had trouble trying to score. If I remember right it took me most of the game with the ball to actually score the one touchdown of the game. He won casualties 2-1.

Then we had the skills draft.

I picked somewhere in the middle, I ended up with; Break Tackle, Side Step?, Wrestle

Game 4 vs. Leathan 2-0 win

Somehow I seem to have Leathan's number at this tournament. We've played 3 times in the 4 CCKO tournaments I've attended and now I've won all three (he destroys me everywhere else!) - winning this game put me at 3 wins 1 loss and up against Grant (who was 4 and 0 after his game four)

DAY 2

Game 5 vs. Grant 0-1 loss

Heartbreak! Grant and I spent all night saturday trash talking. Then he turned around and just started killing off all my Skinks after blitzing his way up the sidelines with his Side-Step Skink. I still scared the crap out of him even down 3 players (4 casualties) freeing up the ball but failing the pick up to tie the game. By winning this game Grant secured the tournament.

Game 6 vs. Alex W 0-0 draw

I should have won this game! I had two chances to score touchdowns and both times - first time I tried to stall and Alex pulled some craziness to knock down my ball carrier, second time my dodge skill failed. Alex never came close to scoring - although he was running Chaos Pact and his big guys failed lots of nega-trait rolls. Frustrating because if I had scored I would have taken 3rd place from Alex.

Instead I had to settle for 4th and Best Defence (given to me because max of 1 award to each participant - I think Grant should have won it).

My Best Defence award

So congrats to Grant for winning CCKO 2015 and our challenge as well!

On May 10th I participated in a one day blood bowl tournament, the Orion Cup 2014. There were 10 players and I brought my Jawbreakers Slann team. It says 4th place but note the asterisk (explained below)

Game 1 vs. BrockGT 3-1 loss

Game 1

Brock was an American visiting family in Toronto, who only just found out about the tournament and brought his lizardmen (talk about travelling prepared!) - he was a really fun opponent and ended up winning Best Painted. As mentioned I don't recall much of the games, though I have an inkling I tried something very high risk/reward early on and it failed.

Game 2 vs. turfchewer 2-1 win

Game 2

I've played Dave before but only in the old XTBBF league that I can recall for sure, not sure about any tournament games before now. I remember this game my slann were not in the leaping mood and it was a very very jammy second touchdown I scored very late in the game with no rerolls to take the win.

Game 3 vs. wapcaplets 5-1 win

Game 3

I've played Chris several times, in both league and tournament play. For this tournament he wanted to play goblins to scratch them off the list of teams he has played at tournaments (in his words "one and done") funny for the guy who runs the blingtoofs' gitbash goblin themed tournament but anyways. He at last against a tier 3 team my slann finally played like they can and ended up scoring 5 touchdowns. Chris managed a thrown goblin touchdown too which is always fun.

All in all a fun day - annoyingly though the T.O. still (even as of 3/16/2015) hasn't posted the actual tournament results so all I know is I am tied on points with doomington and BrockGT and don't know what the tiebreakers are - I've run it through Score to get an idea, and think I'm going to award myself 4th place - doomington had much better TD +/- and Brock beat me in head to head which are two common tiebreakers.Tristan Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14542205146980688446noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658882599058000875.post-25356415931969053662014-05-10T01:03:00.003-04:002014-05-10T01:03:20.209-04:00Icemen Ogres blood bowl team v2Just a quick one. As a thank you for doing the casting I have put together the blue tinted icemen as a second ogres team for my buddy Dave. Simple blue wash and pick out the eyes and mouth. I did the bases a bit differently, these are still made of washers, but I painted brown and then flocked them green before I did the water effects + baking soda snow. A total of +10 painting points for all the bases and the bit of work on the icemen.
I had rushed these guys finished because I was expecting to see him at the Orion Cup blood bowl tournament tomorrow, but unfortunately other commitments have caused him to pull out. In the end I have decided to bring my Jawbreakers slann team out for this one. Not really feeling trying a new team out with no warm up and the team build is not unkind to the slann. I got 3 more linefrogs built tonight too but no painting points for those guys lol!Tristan Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14542205146980688446noreply@blogger.com3
