Raptors Assault squad - progress to date

Well I needed some pics for a "Tale of X Gamers" (for which I'll only be getting half points since they don't even have painted jump packs yet) so I figured I'd post them up for you to see. I'd hoped to have these guys done by now, but I still need to fix up the jump packs and prime them. Once that's done, it should only take one night to finish up.

I've also added a poll at the top of the page, please vote for the green colour you think I should use for the bases - I'm currently leaning towards Catachan Green;
Far left = Catachan Green
Left = Dark Angels Green
Right = Woodland Green
Far right = Goblin Green

Legend of 2HD gamers - pt1 B

The scores have been posted for the Lo2G competition at Two Headed Dragon. I expect these scores to increase as with the campaign (I'll keep posting about the campaign too) we can keep playing games (afaik) until the next deadline. I'm in bold.

Month 1 scoring / Current standings;
7 Tristan - fully painted, best painted, 2 games, 1 win
5 Philip - fully painted, 1 game, 1 win
4 Ken - fully painted, 1 game

For reference (Grey Knight)
3 Karl - fully painted

I know I alway say this, but I want to start getting pics of these events. Maybe even do up a batrep or two.

Goblin Archers (+30pp)

I remembered not to throw out the list I made for painting these guys so here it is. I really only used washes on these guys, the only solid colours were the metallics, black and bleached bone. Using this method I managed to paint all 30 of these guys in probably just over 6 hours work (not including prep) which equals out to almost 5 guys an hour. I'd definitely recommend experimenting with a gray undercoat if you haven't tried.

Prep
1. tape over washer.
2. trim off tape with scissors.
3. cut off slot.
4. super glue to base.
5. white glue and dip in sand/rocks.
6. prime grey with Armory.

Paint
1. black wash base
2. paint eyes white
3. gryphonne sepia wash over eyes, flesh and hair
4. alternate splotches with other skin tones (colour group a)
5. skin tones on all flesh (colour group a)
6. paint body clothing twice (colour group b)
7. shade body clothing (colour group c)
8. paint body clothing (colour group b)
9. boltgun metal on front of boots, shoulderpads, quiver bottom
10. black wash boots, armbands, arrow feathers, shoulders twice
11. paint quiver twice (colour group c)
12. paint bows (colour group d)
13. paint eye pupils black
14. paint teeth bleached bone
15. drybrush base bleached bone

Colour groups
a) gryphonne sepia, ogryn flesh, baal red, thraka green
b) baal red, thraka green
c) devlan mud, ogryn flesh
d) gryphonne sepia, ogryn flesh, flesh wash, devlan mud

Here are some quick pics of the goblin archers I painted up for the Lo2G deadline. Sorry for the lower quality.

Legend of 2HD gamers - pt1

First deadline for Lo2G at Two Headed Dragon was last night. This is the fantasy version of the tale of four gamers. I got my 30 gobbo archers painted up (I will post pics of them later tonight), and I played 2 games (we are using the Scourge of the Crown campaign rules - found here [http://www.bfgclub.org.uk/Scourge_of_the_Crown_rules.pdf]) so started by rolling up three territories, where I got 2 Stone Circles (+1 wizard of any value OR +1 magic item up to 50 points) and a Road (+100 points). This let me add a level 2 shaman with the staff of sneaky stealing to my army. The rest of my army was a goblin warlord with a couple magic items, 5 river trolls, 25 orcs with shields, 15 black orcs with shields, the 30 goblin archers and a spear chukka.

1st game was against Philip and his Wood Elves. He had lots of wardancers, some dryads, 10 scouts, 10 glade guard, 5 glade riders and a hero and mage. Game seemed to be edging his way (he kept running his scouts out of charge sight of my black orcs and pelting them with arrows) however my shamans staff meant I was able to stop his mage from using the forest moving/attacking spell for the first few turns, which left his wardancers stuck in the forest until I was able to charge them with my trolls. My trolls proceeded to rout his wardancers (after he killed my shaman - who had miscast and lost a wound) and destroy them pursuing, then do the same to his dryads. My goblin archers saw off his glade riders in one good round of shooting. In the end I got a marginal victory, and took the Town as new territory (woohoo extra special choice!).

2nd game was against Ken and his High Elves. Ken is just learning so this game was a bit of a mess, as I forgot about his horses attacking in one turn and we ended up having to cut off before my turn four could happen, however my black orcs had seen off his lion chariot and a unit of lothern sea guard. Also had his Silver Helms locked with my orcs, about to be flank charged by my trolls, and also while they were stuck in the middle my spear chukka killed 3 with a good shot (coming from the side, as he had 9 and we lined them up in one long rank). Ken decided to forfeit cuz he had to get home, so I picked up another territory (another road, woot!) bringing my total up to 5.

In total my trolls got 2 experience points (need to remember about these in game!!!), my black orcs got 2 and my goblin archers got 1. Other stuff I forgot sometimes through these games being my first games with O&G were; bonuses to waaagh magic from units in combat, elves cause fear to goblins (made my general useless a couple turns), calling a waaagh for one turn and the change where shields give you a better save in close combat.

Quite pleased with this night (tons of fun!) and also with my army. I will eventually want to change from goblin characters to orcs or black orcs. Also very impressed with my trolls, I'm going to want to keep my warlord with them in future as well I think. I should also have a second spear chukka for future games and was pleased with their performance. Gotta give them an orc bully though as Philips hero mauled the crew in my first game. Also I need to build some movement trays for the guys with magnetized bases.

Now.. what to paint up for next month's deadline. I really like how my goblins turned out (only used washes and metallics over grey undercoat and they look awesome - hoping I picked up best painted for this month). 3 trolls would make the points limit. Might be easier than painting another large batch of guys.

I'll post the scores on Sunday once our Grey Knight posts them in the Two Headed Dragon forums.

ps. I also traded Philip some Wood Elves for an Escher gang and some Space Marine bits, so unfortunately my mini queue #'s are going up. Le sigh ;)

Tale of 2HD Gamers = Victory

Whew, what a fun day. Played two games of 40K, losing both. Took first place in the challenge (yay!) and I wanna congratulate Thomas for making it interesting. Had me worried when he started pulling out objectives, I was definitely glad I wrote up the fluff and built terrain. Being the only two entrants who completed the challenge we split the 3rd place prize. I ended up with the AoBR box (to be ordered) and $10, while Thomas has $50 to work with. I really found this motivating and hope I can get some minis for the Tale of 2HD Gamers - WHFB.

Update - calculated the final scores, I'm in bold.
Month 4 scoring;
9 Thomas - fully painted, 1 game, 1 win, 2 objectives, 2 terrain pieces, best painted
9 Tristan - fully painted, 2 games, 1 objective, 2 terrain pieces, written fluff

Final standings;
29 Tristan - fully paintedx4, 7 games, 2 wins, 3 objectives, best paintedx2, 2 terrain pieces, written fluff - complete
24 Thomas - fully paintedx3, partially painted, 3 games, 2 wins, 2 objectives, best paintedx2, 2 terrain pieces - complete
6 Ian - fully paintedx2 - incomplete
5 Ken - fully painted, 2 games - incomplete
4 Josh - fully painted, 1 game - incomplete

For reference (Grey Knight)
16 Karl - fully paintedx4, 2 games, 2 wins - complete

Then played a great game of blood bowl with Karl, orc vs orc. It was pretty much a ruckus from the get-go. I stomped my way down the field, losing and re-gaining the football before scoring in the last turn of the half. Karl flung his gobbo for a touchdown. Fouling and the ref were much in evidence. My troll didn't go stupid once this game, and caused two casualties. Karls troll however spent much of the game stupid, costing him 2 wasted re-rolls failing his loner test, and at least two Blitz actions. Late in the game I had a failed attempt at using Hail Mary Pass with Diving Catch, and Karl started passing the ball upfield. He managed to get it to a lineman who I managed to get a tackle zone on by blitzing his troll with mine, and running my thrower in. I did run a lineman in but he fell. Karl went to blitz my thrower and failed his go for it without any re-rolls. I got a second chance at the Hail Mary / Diving Catch combo. Gobbo still managed to scuffle it. Game ends as a tie, 1-1. Awesome.

Tale of 2HD Gamers - the day of reckoning!

Well the day has arrived. Last night I packed up my Novamarines to bring into Two Headed Dragon for the final date of the Tale of 2HD Gamers challenge. I also took my point form fluff and fleshed it out to proper paragraphs (for the most part) with some added detail. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I've also got my completed terrain piece made for the store (hopefully scoring a bonus point just to lock it up) but I doubt anyone will have a camera - which is disappointing as I thought the army looked great all setup on some terrain at home.

Fingers crossed I'm walking outta there with a new AoBR box - hopefully Eng (one of the employees) has his AoBR there so I can leave with two sets of Space Marines.

For the Emperor!!

Novamarines Fluff - historical timeline

I've taken the bits of fluff I could find, and themed my stuff around babylon due to the ties with astrology.
Here I've tried to add further details, and flesh it out a little point. Mostly point form stuff.
I hope to have something typed up to bring on Friday for the Tale of 2HD Gamers.
Just not sure which way I should go for their home worlds' sun dying. A or B - what do you think?

History:
021.M31: Second Founding
* chapter founded and gifted the world of novalon as it's homeworld, with a sacred quest to follow the insights gained by their astrologers to combat the four monsters of myth (chaos gods - see below)

Chapter Master - Nur-Vuen
M37: The Novamarines are scattered throughout the galaxy, and have not fought together as a chapter since the early years of M37.
* purposely scattered. following the direction of librarians to effect change in key incidents.
* each battle company recruits as they travel, usually have scouts.
* time of colour scheme change. each battle company has been sent on seperate missions, and are are periodically reinforced by reserve company units. the quartered scheme represents the split of the battle companies in different directions. each mission is devoted to fighting the 4 chaos powers.
Most renowned questing Chapter Master - Hannuravi

The novalonians?/honorums?? have their own names for the chaos gods.
Qingu (mankind's blood) = Khorne (questing company: 5)
Namtar (deadly illness) = Nurgle (questing company: 4)
Zu (the winged lion - shapechanger) = Tzeetch (questing company: 3)
Resheph (plague & war - shapechanger) = Slaanesh (questing company: 2) nb. plague mistranslated meaning mutate

499.M41: Ashurtanival becomes Chief Librarian.

901-912.M41: Badab War
907.M41: Novamarines and Howling Griffons are brought into Badab war allowing the Red Scorpions and Fire Hawks to return to their duties in the galactic east.
912.M41: The Novamarines were granted salvage rights to spacecraft and a portion of booty for their part in the Badab war.

914.M41: Sometime after this date – chapter symbol changes?
Chapter Master - Sansu-divana - chapter master at the time of darkness (sacking of novalon)
Fulfillment of chaos (zu?) plan (to combat novamarines quest to influence key incidents against chaos)
causes the sun for novalon's system to
A] supernova, results in most living on novalon to perish from heat,
B] burn out unnaturally, results in arctic shift causing those without underground shelter to freeze,
followed by an attack though the world survives and is renamed honourum for those who died.
Chapter Master - Vannash - institutes symbol change

940.M41: Chapter Master - Aniravvash dies fighting Tzeench cults revolt on planet Chicano and is interred as a Dreadnought, the world is lost.

Current Chapter Master - Tivtanzi
Current Captain 3rd Company - Avra, named after Avra-Hanin, hero of the flood myth - new disaster foretold.
998.M41: Novamarines task force Septus under attack from Chaos Renegades believed to be in the employ of Huron Blackheart.
999.M41: Abaddon's Thirteenth Crusade
Sent 6 companies, largest combined action by Novamarines chapter
* All four battle companies plus two full reserve companies

Novamarines - definitely army looking!

Well here's a sneak preview of my completed 1000+ points Novamarines for the Tale of 2HD Gamers challenge at Two Headed Dragon. It includes;
  • AoBR Captain (Avra)
  • Converted Librarian (Ashurtanival)/Tigurius 'Counts As'
  • AoBR Tactical Squad
  • Converted Deathwatch Sergeant + Extra Bolter Marine
  • AoBR Terminator Squad + Converted AoBR Heavy Flamer Terminator
  • 11 Scouts - 2 Bolters, 3 Shotguns, 3 Sniper Rifles, Heavy Bolter, Missile Launcher, Converted Sergeant with Combi-Flamer.
  • AoBR Dreadnought (Aniravvash)
  • 3 custom objective markers (ammo dump, lost terminator helmet, wounded veteran)

Sorry for the crappy pic. Short term plan is to get lots of games in. Longer term I'm planning to treat myself to 2 bolter scouts and 2 bp/ccw scouts (hopefully ebay turns up something cheap) to round out to 15 and really give me lots of options as to arming them. As well once I'm happy with my scratchbuilt drop pods I'll eventually want two (one for dread, one for tac) so even setting up first I could not have a model on the table. One I get those final scouts painted up I will also go through the whole army for at least a round of highlights.

Novamarines painting update

I've been really pushing to make sure I have these guys all ready for next friday (final day of the Two Headed Dragon tale of 4 gamers competition). The scouts are pretty much done. The heavy flamer terminator is to the same standard as the first five, and I've begun filing in details on the termies. The librarian has seen a lot of the brush - though I still haven't even done any serious highlighting. The wounded veteran objective is pretty much done (with battle damage!! I think I did a pretty good job on the damage to his armour) but needs a bit of blood pooling on the ground from his blown off hand.

The scores for the Tale of 2HD Gamers round three has been posted. Did claim the best painted point, so I did better than I thought. A Tale of 2HD Gamers - pt3

Not sure of the exact scoring yet, but I gained at least 6 points for fully painted and 2 games, 2 wins (only 1 win counts towards points) with an additional possible point for best painted, putting me at minimum of 19 points. I also wasn't ready to submit my wounded veteran objective marker this month, so I will get that extra point next month. Also getting my strongpoint piece of terrain painted up along with the rest of my Novamarines for a bonus point next month. I still might go in on the terrain building day, we'll have to see how things go. Currently the leader in scoring so I'm trying to make sure I close out the competition with a bang to grab first place for a free AoBR box.

I will post a full update with 3rd month scoring once it's available.

Weak on the updates

So I realize I've been lax on the updates, lack of camera = lack of photos.. So I figured I'd fill you in on what I've been up to in the meantime..
  • I completed painting the ranged Novamarines scouts (6 with bolters, sniper rifles and missile launcher), this was for the Tale of 2HD Gamers competition so the motivation was there. Going in on Friday.
  • I also built a 3rd objective for this army. It's a wounded veteran marine with a broken leg and blown off arm - throwing that last ditch grenade. I actually really liked how this came out and am pumped to paint it once I get a chance to do some priming.
  • I've been investigating card & scratch built models. I did up a very simple rhino I printed on card stock with the Space Sharks logo. I actually printed 8 so I could use them as rhinos for a battle company in Apocalypse and thereby use my magnetized rhinos as tanks. I also did a couple terrain pieces, a very simple & cheap gun battery (battery is card, glued onto an upside down small paper plate, which was painted and flocked) that probably only took 20 minutes of working time, and a nicer strongpoint which was from a template and built into a hill with some camouflage netting. More card related stuff to come.
  • Speaking of which, I took the imperial command 40K markers from rocketshipgames.com and created a reverse side with the Novamarines logo. I plan to make a set of counters for each army.
  • I did some more details on the Novamarines captain, terminator sergeant and deathwatch marine. Mostly playing with painting the power swords, and I have an idea for how I want to paint the librarians force rod.
  • Then I got bored without stuff I really wanted to paint primed, so I built the 5 assault marines that came in the battle force box I picked up. I've built them as Raptors, which I plan to build up led by Shrike. The sergeant has a lightning claw, bolt pistol & combat shield, he also got an older metal jump pack so I could save a plastic one for magnetizing the Salamanders deathwatch flamer. One has a flamer (or will once I have a flamer to give him) and I also ended up deciding that the power fist veteran I have will lead a tactical squad of Raptors due to all the icons modeled on.
  • Finally since I'm still waiting to prime I've been painting up my blood bowl troll. He's mostly done as his stone skin was done with much drybrushing and washes.
My better half's sister is supposed to be sending us her old digital camera, so I hope to be able to get more pics soon, and have a higher frequency of pics.

Recently found a new hobby store in my old 'hood - just as I was starting to do up my AoBR marines a Grey Knight in the area sponsored a 'Tale of 4 Gamers" style competition.

This project was my first 40K army since getting back into the hobby.  A lot of the inspiration for my Space Marines came from thinking about deathwatch in Kill-Team.  I built a little matrix that made sure I had original or successor chapters from each "loyal" legion, and I especially chose several chapters involved in the Badab War (based on the original Badab War:A Dark Stars Campaign - big ups to Gadge the writer as it inspired me a lot to give character to my marines through their chapters) as I already knew Marine vs. Marine battles were common (my bro and I used to play my SW against his DA) and picking some from each side would ensure I could explain the battle in fluff terms more easily.  After getting a bit of painting practice under my belt, I began looking around for hobby stores to play and meet other gamers.  This was back when GW still had grey knights - I found a store near my old neighborhood (two headed dragon) where the local grey knight was beginning a "tale of four gamers" style competition - called "Tale of 2HD Gamers" aka To2G, requiring a portion painted every month, and playing games got you points.  Being able to be a part of something similar to possibly the most inspiring set of articles ever to grace white dwarf was a real motivator, I joined in time and selected the Novamarines as the quartered pattern is striking even without much highlights and I had the bits to make their deathwatch marine (even back then I knew I would paint multiple chapters and tie them together through deathwatch).  Turns out I ended up winning the competition (you can read all about it using this label link) taking home some loot and gaining a huge amount of motivation, which ended up being applied to other chapters as I had a small usable force painted.  Now with some newer Badab related supplements out, these guys are likely to see some new lovin' - I especially wanna get the rest of the scouts painted up as well as building a land speeder storm to carry them around.

Terminator Helmet Objective
Wounded Marine Objective *O1
Hidden Ammo Stash Objective

*HQ1 - The captain from the AoBR set was the first character to get painted.  His power sword has broken so many times it's probably had three or four paint schemes too.
*HQ2 - Blaylock is a recent addition, from IA9: Badab War, I kit bashed this model from just standard terminator bits, but used a chainsword and lightning claw to build his master crafted chainfist.  He still needs some freehand on his black shoulderpad.
*HQ3 - This is my favourite model from my Novamarines, I converted his force axe into a staff and used a bit from the empire wizards kit to have the circulating heavens.  Before FW came out with anything new about the Novamarines, I had written my own Index Astartes (also linked above!) where I had based them on the Babylonians due to their association with astrology/prediction - a reason I developed for their icon having changed from the sun/12 point circlet surrounded by stars to a skull/12 point circlet with no stars.  It fit in well since they had some drastic change and then had never fought together as a chapter much after a certain point.  I've had further ideas to implement in IA:Novamarines and will probably try to give it a much needed update once another big chunk of them are complete.
*HQ4 - Also a newer addition, I started building a terminator librarian when the Badab War playaid developed by FLoT (6 months after the To2G competition) came out to use as the special character Mahabala Durja.  IIRC RealGenius from FLoT was influenced by my IA in naming this character (le woot)
*T1 - Part of what really sparked my love of Space Marines again, and gave me the answer to tie all my different chapters together is the deathwatch.  The Novamarines got the first one due to a perfect bit (Asmodai's power sword) having the logo sculpted into a shoulder pad.  Like every deathwatch marine I build, he has a back banner that just uses a simple pin to attach or detach from his backpack.
*T2 - Due to the "gradual build" idea behind the competition, I needed to have two troop choices for my first game (to have a legal list) so to give me some flexibility and make use of my deathwatch marine, I also included a spare bolter armed marine in the painted squad so I could actually use two plain 5 man tactical squads.
*S1 - This sergeant will be getting a bit of an update at some point, I built him with a chainsword before I'd started playing the new edition and didn't realize the chainsword with a combi-weapon gave no benefit.  he will get either a bolt pistol, power fist or power sword (unlikely) - any suggestions there I'd be all ears.  This is done - he has a bolt pistol.
*S2 - I just used a boltgun on one of the cloaked scout bodies with a piece of sprue for a silencer.  He can fit in with the boltguns if I want to skip the heavy weapon or be used as Telion or just a sniper sergeant.
*S3 - I originally planned to keep this army fairly small as the quartered scheme isn't the quickest or easiest - so during the competition I was trying to stretch out every available resource (my plan at the time was a set of AoBR, a box of each type of scout, a librarian and home-made drop pods - only ever built one) I made an extra boltgun armed scout using the additional torso from the snipers box and a small GW palm tree, sculpting his cloak over some sprue where his legs would be.
*O1 - The competition gave bonus points for building objectives and terrain for the store (I also built a small bunker which remains at the store, but got pretty beat up as it was based off the old card one in white dwarf) My favourite is the wounded marine, missing an arm and using a grenade in a last ditch effort to take as many enemies with him as he can. I got asked if he was break-dancing the other day which was pretty funny!
