Amorical Cup 2017 - result = AMORICAL CUP CHAMPIONS (38/96 personally)

On the weekend of June 2nd/3rd - me and my teammates traveled down to Virginia - where the second North American Team Championship blood bowl tournament was being held, titled the Amorical Cup.

You can read up about it on the website here. Basically teams of 4 entered, each coach needing to use a different race and each race having a points value.  Your team could add up to 10 points, or if you wanted to compete for the equivalent of a "stunty" team trophy, your team had to add up to 6 points or less.

We chose to go this route
Me: Slann (1), Stimme: Underworld (1), Genghis: Necromantic (3), Doomington: Goblins (1)

Tier D (1 point) teams could take 4 normal and 4 double skills.  Mine were as follows;

  • 2x Catcher w Dodge
  • 2x Catcher w Guard
  • Linefrog w Strip Ball
  • 2x Linefrog w Wrestle
  • Kroxigor w Block
It was held at Center Of The Universe Brewing Company in Ashland, Virginia - a great choice!
Game 1 vs Gken1 (chaos): 1-2 loss

He kicked. Stimme would have been proud.  It was a very methodical cage downfield, where I still had 3 of my 4 rerolls left when I scored turn 6. Everything was going my way in the first half - Ken couldn't take any players off the pitch, his minotaur was rolling wild animals like crazy, etc.  This probably led to me feeling the luck was on my side later in the half. He received and went down sideline. I popped the ball but got greedy and tried a pass instead of just holding out for 1-0 at HT. I fumbled the ball and it scattered out of bounds and came back in where he could pick it up and throw a pass, which he duly did needing a gfi to score.  I should have just caged over the ball and ensured as much as possible going into the second half he would need to score twice if he wanted to win.

In the second half, I kicked, he received. I popped the ball but he started taking my players off the pitch. Popped it maybe 2 more times but couldn't get ahold of it. Turn 7 desperation I blitz with my krox needing 2 dodges and 2 gfi and make them all only to roll double push on the block.  By the end of the game his mino had rolled wild animal on 5 of 6 blitzes.

Other teammates results;
Stimme: 2-2 draw with Gaixo aka Nate Beem the NAF Tournament Director
Genghis: 2-1 win
Doomington: 0-1 loss to Gobdomino aka Nate Ball from skulls and ones podcast.

Game 2 vs Chuckie1982 (ogres): 5-1 win

Bit of a harsh match for English Chris sometime co-conspirator of the skulls and ones podcast. He kicked and I scored on turn 3 or 4. Then I turned him over twice in the first half to go into HT at 3-0. He averaged 2 bonehead ogres per turn the entire match, the first turn alone 4 ogres went bonehead.

Second half I kicked and he scored. Then I scored again and turned him over a final time to win 5-1. His dice were ice cold, he hit me tons just couldn't make any lasting impression.  Was a great opponent kept a smile the entire time. Bought him a beer and we had some laughs

Other teammates results;
Stimme: 4-1 win
Genghis: 2-1 win
Doomington: 1-1 draw

Game 3 vs. Jim Luft (pro elves): 2-1 win

I received and unfortunately wasn't able to do much damage, although I KO'd both of his linemen with catch. I scored giving Jim 3 or 4 turns to reply in the first. Pretty sure I even got a hold of the ball again but he took down my catcher then elf'd me dodging through tackle zones 3 times to hand-off then pass to score.

In the second half I managed to score slowly pretty sure I left him less turns to score than the first half. Finally his catch linemen came back, but managed to hold him off. It's hazy now I can't recall exactly where his drive broke down.

Stimme: 1-0 win
Genghis: 1-2 loss
Doomington: 2-1 win

Game 4 vs. Kilgannon (norse): 3-1 win

Quite nervous coming up against a team full of block, was expecting to take a beating. Luckily I won the coin toss so got to receive and I got a few off the pitch early. Played well for my first TD. He got few hits each turn and I made a gap and ran a bunch of players through. I think he still managed to knock over the ball carrier but had enough around there to grab it and score.

Then came his curse of the butterfingers. I kicked to him, he won a reroll on the kick off, but elected not to use it on the pickup since the ball was pretty safe in his backfield. Unfortunately this sparked a string of 2 or 3 turns he could not pick up the ball, and it meant he had to rush things and had to pass the ball, I got an opportunity to intercept and duly rolled a 6 and that led to me scoring a second in the first half.

Now Scott had to rush it to score twice for a tie. He still had some butterfingers happening so it took about 3 turns. Then he kicked to me and I got it pretty deep in his backfield but not perfectly caged so he popped the ball but couldn't pick it up and I leaped over, grabbed it and scored to essentially seal the game.

Other teammates results;
Stimme: 1-0 win
Genghis: 1-1 draw
Doomington: 1-2 loss

Game 5 vs. Manz62 (slann): 2-2 draw

This was probably both my toughest match and my best played match. Of all the other slann rosters I saw in the lead up to the tournament, I probably liked his the best.

It was probably a mistake to kick, allowing him to hit me first, even with his krox stunned by a thrown rock, he casualtied two linefrogs in the first turn forcing me to use my apo right away. I spent the entire match down players due to his dice just being on fire.

I forced him to score in turn 4 because he just didn't feel safe, so it gave me enough time to manage a late score to tie it up before half time. Unfortunately the next kick off was a riot so he got an extra turn to score, which he duly did once I failed my leap into his cage. He then also got a blitz when I had setup for a very unlikely OTT attempt.

So going into second half I wasn't feeling good about what was happening, but one thing about Slann is you never give up. So once again I got plenty of targets deep and some had to be left standing. I freed them up and I used diving catch to my advantage to keep it to a short pass attempt, leaving Manu a bit shocked. So 2-2 with 3 turns left for him to tie it up and again I left him uncomfortable enough he tried to make the ball extra secure, by handing off to a catcher inside a sideline cage with 2 guarders. Unfortunately for him it was the wrong move and he dropped the ball. I knocked down one of the catchers and KOd him. Left 2 tackle zones on the ball, however 1 was already in an opponents tackle zone. He knocked them away but failed the pickup with no rerolls and gave me the tie.
Definitely tough on Manu having been in control of the game for pretty much the entire time, but no small credit to me for just sticking with it.

Other teammates results;
Stimme: 2-1 win
Genghis: 1-1 draw
Doomington: 2-0 win

Game 6 vs. flyingdingle (wood elf): 1-4 loss

This was a rough one for me. Wasn't a terrible dicing but just failures at crucial opportunities. At 1-1 in the first half receiving  again I threw a pass and fumbled it. Allowing Sol to recover and score. I should have had a reroll left but had earlier taken an opportunity to get a good hit on a wardancer with 3 dice from my krox. Unfortunately didn't do anything, definitely an emotional reroll.
Second half I did fail quite a bit which was frustrating, but I'd had my share of luck too, so sometimes you have to take it on the chin. Sol got 3-1 up and twice I couldn't manage a consolation and he rounded it out with a final TD to really rub my nose in it.

Other teammates results;
Stimme: 2-0 win
Genghis: 2-1 win
Doomington: 1-1 draw

Final Team Standings
So at the end of the day - we beat out Bryan Tew's Rocky Mountain Renegades team by 1 POINT to secure the Amorical Cup Championship for 2017.  Thanks in large part to Alex (Stimme) going 5 wins 1 draw and coming in first (unfortunately he had to leave immediately after his game to catch his flight - which then was delayed so he could easily have stuck around) but we all finished .500 or greater and if we hadn't of finished first, we would have won the All-Amorical Cup trophy (for a 6 point team)
Genghis, Stimme (not pictured), natsirtdm, Doomington (aka Birdhat)
Stimme's 1st place trophy (minus Stimme)
Also as a whole the Canucks did very well - finishing 1st, 3rd (Furious Four - they took the All Amorical trophy from us in a share the wealth thing, Joe Byers placed 2nd), 5th (Rapide et Dangereux from Quebec), 8th (Grand River Rollers), and 11th (Blame Canada) ALL in the top half of teams.

Here's the Canadian contingent.

and everyone!

thanks to the organizers for a great event!

Catchup: Orion Cup 2014 - result = 4th/10*

Whew - that was a long posting hiatus (finally posted 3/15/2015) going to try to at least update my blood bowl games/tournaments so I can keep that page up to date, although they are gonna be short and after a while I am going to update the date to push them back into the past where they belong!

On May 10th I participated in a one day blood bowl tournament, the Orion Cup 2014.  There were 10 players and I brought my Jawbreakers Slann team. It says 4th place but note the asterisk (explained below)

Game 1 vs. BrockGT 3-1 loss
Game 1
Brock was an American visiting family in Toronto, who only just found out about the tournament and brought his lizardmen (talk about travelling prepared!) - he was a really fun opponent and ended up winning Best Painted.  As mentioned I don't recall much of the games, though I have an inkling I tried something very high risk/reward early on and it failed.

Game 2 vs. turfchewer 2-1 win
Game 2
I've played Dave before but only in the old XTBBF league that I can recall for sure, not sure about any tournament games before now.  I remember this game my slann were not in the leaping mood and it was a very very jammy second touchdown I scored very late in the game with no rerolls to take the win.

Game 3 vs. wapcaplets 5-1 win
Game 3
I've played Chris several times, in both league and tournament play.  For this tournament he wanted to play goblins to scratch them off the list of teams he has played at tournaments (in his words "one and done") funny for the guy who runs the blingtoofs' gitbash goblin themed tournament but anyways. He at last against a tier 3 team my slann finally played like they can and ended up scoring 5 touchdowns. Chris managed a thrown goblin touchdown too which is always fun.

All in all a fun day - annoyingly though the T.O. still (even as of 3/16/2015) hasn't posted the actual tournament results so all I know is I am tied on points with doomington and BrockGT and don't know what the tiebreakers are - I've run it through Score to get an idea, and think I'm going to award myself 4th place - doomington had much better TD +/- and Brock beat me in head to head which are two common tiebreakers.

Icemen Ogres blood bowl team v2

Just a quick one. As a thank you for doing the casting I have put together the blue tinted icemen as a second ogres team for my buddy Dave. Simple blue wash and pick out the eyes and mouth. I did the bases a bit differently, these are still made of washers, but I painted brown and then flocked them green before I did the water effects + baking soda snow. A total of +10 painting points for all the bases and the bit of work on the icemen.
I had rushed these guys finished because I was expecting to see him at the Orion Cup blood bowl tournament tomorrow, but unfortunately other commitments have caused him to pull out. In the end I have decided to bring my Jawbreakers slann team out for this one. Not really feeling trying a new team out with no warm up and the team build is not unkind to the slann. I got 3 more linefrogs built tonight too but no painting points for those guys lol!

NaBBLe becomes HoBBLe (league season 2)

This past weekend was the playoffs of a local leagues second season.  The league has been renamed from NaBBLe to HoBBLe to be a little fluffier with it's location (Toronto ie. Hogtown).  You may remember that I walked away as champion of season 1 with my dark elf team the Karond Kar Raiders - and due to that they spent a season touring the olde worlde.  I brought a slann team for season 2 (my jawbreakers aka the googlies)

It was a pretty rough season!  The commish came up with the idea of playing a game vs. "the piggies" who were a bunch of halfings in order to build up some SPP.  Unfortunately for me, since slann don't have any piece that starts with block - I could only take them down on POWs or have to take a chance on having my own armour broken.  Dave played the piggies vs. me and he CAS'd all 3 of my catchers, including killing one outright!!  My first few games I basically took insane beatdowns including one game where I was on the receiving end of 7 CAS.

For all that though, I still managed to do really well with them.  I finished the league in 5th place - 2 points out of contention for the playoffs, which considering I was consistently;
a) having to replace dead/injured players (6 deaths, 2 MV busts, 2 MNG)
b) playing with a minimum of 1 journeyman every game
c) having between 300-650!! worth of inducements each game
I felt pretty good about my final record of 5W/1D/4L which is better than .500 - I'm not sure what the tiebreaker was between myself and Nicco - it could have been TD's scored (not diff, he beat me there) or it could have been head to head as I won our game.

So on Sunday we got together for the playoffs and anyone not playing in the playoffs got a "grudge match".  With identical records Nicco and I matched up again and while the game was close in terms of scoring (might've been different if his zombie didn't intercept a pass!!) he tore my team up pretty bad, killing outright my AG5/Guard blitzer as well as my ST4/mighty blow linefrog. Taking the grudge match into account I came out at exactly .500 which is still pretty impressive.

Originally I had planned to bring a new team next season as a number of people were planning to start new teams - however instead of just 1 game vs. the piggies - the plan is to have a small 1 day 3 game tournament to build up SPP for your team.  Unfortunately for me, it's scheduled for the day after my wedding so if I want to live to see season 3 I'm sure I will be missing it.  That gives me two options, 1) bring back the dark elves or 2) continue with the slann.  At first I thought nearly everyone was bringing a new team and that would make it pretty douchey to bring a tooled up team back, but now it seems that at least 4-5 coaches might bring their same teams from season 2 back so we'll play it by ear!

give my buddy a goblin...

... and you could win a print of my Xmas gift - two of my blood bowl teams duking it out!!

I promised the jpeg of my Xmas gift, here it is in all it's glory!
torne bane flaming ears (undead) vs. the jawbreakers (counts as slann)
You can check out the details HERE - but basically in order to be eligible for the contest, you need to paint a goblin for Abraxis' blood bowl team and donate it to him.  Therefore the prize had to be suitably awesome - hence the print.  I will get it signed by the artist as well.  He's also generously offered a coupon as a runner up prize

I selected the looney (chainsaw) goblin and plan to convert one similar to the rat wielding goblin I threw together for the blingtoof tournament.  I will use the same body and throw a space marine chainsword on there, and add some pads, etc.

We already have five people entered, please consider entering - it's just a painted goblin and the prize is well worth it.  Abraxis loved my idea of the harlequins painted by others as a necromunda gang so much he wanted something similar himself!  I already have 7 painted harlequins and there are two more floating in the blog-o-sphere (one with Mik and one with Paul of "The Man Cave") so my spire brat gang is in great shape.

Best Fiance EVER! merry christmas to ME!

It has been a little over two years since a post similar to this one went up on my birthday.  What a merry christmas it has turned out to be! My wonderful fiance has commissioned me another amazing piece of artwork by our friend Gavin (www.artbygavin.com) to decorate my new man cave! It's based on two of my blood bowl teams; the undead (Torne Bane Flaming Ears) and the team she helped me to paint, the slann (Jawbreakers).

Once again Gavin has completely outdone himself and included so much effort and detail into this painting - it is truly a masterpiece! I'll wait until I have the jpg's to post to describe all the amazing details and special little tidbits that he always incorporates into his work, but let's just say as usual ALL the details are picture perfect.  Also speechless how brilliant my fiance is! Best christmas gift ever!

Deathbowl IX: Year of the Elf summary

Here I just wanted to compile a quick Deathbowl IX summary.  My apologies for how long this has taken, I had no opportunity to post anything while in Ottawa for the tournament due to all the drinking and shenanigans - and once back I had an extremely busy week so this was really my first day with a solid chunk of free time I could devote to compiling the recaps.

Game 1 recap

Game 2 recap

Game 3 recap

Game 4 recap

In the end I went 1 win/2 losses/1 tie, and finished in 15th place (out of 20) - so another game would have put me on the bottom table!  I finished just behind my opponent Colin (orxymandiuz) from game 4 even though we tied so I`m guessing he had less losses than me.  Happy I managed to stay above the new kid Kohl who joined us for his first tournament (who won the rising star as he was greatly improved across the tournament) and considering who my losses were to I don't feel too bad about my performance.

Slann are definitely a strong team for the deathbowl format, getting Leap + Very Long Legs is a potent combination.  I think next year I may need to try having a super player like Leathan does when the tournament rules offer than option.  I will need to practice keeping that player alive too.

Deathbowl IX (year of the elf): Game 4 tweet recap

Sunday had the final game - I was all the way down on table 4 for the first time all tournament.  Was playing against Colin, who I had never met before - very classy dude - I got a little amped up when everyone on the table thought he'd dodged without being next to my blitzer with diving tackle (he had, and it saved me getting a 3rd loss as diving tackle knocked his chance to score down) - and he took it with class and good sportsmanship! Nothing less than I'd expect from most blood bowl coaches!

Mark (halflings) was to my left and Chris (dwarves) was to my right.  I've played them both before so there was plenty of trash talking and joking.

#db9g4 final game, slann vs slann and halfling vs dwarves gonna be a stoooopid game lol #bloodbowl
initial setup
#db9g4 fuckin halflings have scored twice, both thanks to throw team-mate :-@ #nufflelovestheunderdog
joked with the guys how all my pics were the setup - AFTER something happened
#db9g4 freaking dwarf intercepts my pass #damnyounuffle #whydoesnufflehateme
damn dwarves intercepted two of my passes
#db9g4 both slann teams manage to score, our game is tied, halflings still leading dwarves 2-0 #bloodbowl
more setup pics lol - blame the Chelsea game!
#db9g4 opponents slann intercepts a dwarf pass, then dwarves intercept my pass #nuffleowesmebig
second dwarf interception
#db9g4 dwarves scoring preserved my tie, just trying to screw the halflings chance to 1TT #dickmove
dick move complete!

So final tournament results for me were 1 win/2 losses/1 tie. Considering the two losses were to 1st/2nd place finishers I am happy with that.  Always difficult when you start tournaments with convincing wins, as it puts you against the better coaches.

Deathbowl IX (year of the elf): Game 3 tweet recap

A quick recap of game 3.  By this time was pretty exhausted and it was taking most of my energy just to pay attention to the game.  A few quick updates were all I had in me.  After the first few updates I needed to focus on the game - only my opponent and I scored all game.  Unfortunately instead of ending up as a 3-3 tie, my opponent (Pat from my right in game 2) managed to score an extra touchdown in the last round of turns instead of going the other way (up until that point we'd been trading scoring). Well played to him.

#db9g3 on table two, against elves. #bloodbowl still trying to get the ball
back on the normal deathbowl boards
#db9g3 turn 6 hoping to work my way into scoring position /bloodbowl
pushing up the right side
#db9g3 managed a score passing to a lineman, all tied up 1-1. #whutupshun #bloodbowl
woot, managed to score passing to a lineman
#db9g3 only me and my opponent have scored, it's 3-2 to him right now. 1 turn to go, will take a miracle to get a tie
he managed to score again instead of me, grrrr

So after this game I was 1 win/2 losses (losses were to 1st place - Leathan and eventual 2nd place winner - Pat) so I didn't feel too bad about them but they definitely hurt me in terms of ranking/tournament place.

Deathbowl IX (year of the elf): Game 2 tweet recap

Recap of game 2, had a bad feeling at the beginning.  Leathan is a notoriously tough opponent, because he generally takes a single super player and protects him very well making it terribly difficult to get to grips with him.  I knew I would need help against him but with two elf teams going horizontally couldn't see much help coming from them.  Good ol' Tom "Cat" (dark elf) was sitting to my left and Pat (pro elf) to my right.

#db9g2 been a tense match, losing 1-0 but have a chance to score in my turn 8 #bloodbowl #pleasenuffleplease
had the ball on the left, needed to stay on my feet - didn't happen
#db9g2 slann can't leap or dodge this game, had later turn in both halves, not good at playing reactive game #bloodbowl
going last definitely didn't help
#db9g2 slann tripping all over themselves. made one successful leap all game :-@ #nufflesucks #damnyounuffle
I think this setup was after Tom's TD
#db9g2 made a rerolled leap only to fail a 3+ dodge with reroll. lots of rerolls failing. #nufflesucks
picked up the ball in 3 tackle zones too!
#db9g2 a chance for a consolation touchdown, but it's in nuffles hands. #notexpectingmuch
got knocked over again!
#db9g2 getting whooped, might get scored on again, 6 failed leaps, 4 failed dodges, might be frogs legs for dinner
yup, he scored a third time :(

So after this game, I was 1 win/1 loss (to the eventual champion) and hoping my next game might see my leaps/dodges work.  I ended up playing Pat who was to my right in game 2.

Deathbowl IX (year of the elf): Game 1 tweet recap

Here's my recap of game 1.  I was fortunate enough to start on the top table (absolutely sweet table to play on) and it was my slann vs. Robs necromantic (no flesh golems) and Peters pro elves vs. Philippes wood elves.  I've played both Rob and Peter before, but this was Philippes first tournament (deathbowl to boot!).

A bit of his inexperience showed, and benefited me greatly - after winning the roll to go first, Philippe failed a "go for it" with reroll moving his second player - basically giving me first turn (though his treeman had a tackle zone on both balls)

#db9g1 game 1 of #deathbowlIX begins. went with the slann, it's all about leap baby!! #bloodbowl
first setup, pro elf on left, wood elf on right
#db9g1 slann in early control - holding both balls #whutupshun #bloodbowl @GDubToThaFeetUp
going first really gave the slann a huge edge
#db9g1 slann score on turn 4, possibly the earliest touchdown of the day #whutupshun #bloodbowl setup again already
pro elf & necro still have their turn 4, 1-0 slann!!
#db9g1 almost pull off the craziest pickup after scattering ball can't be caught by a bunch of pansy elves. #bloodbowl
at least four failed 4+ catch rolls by elven players
#db9g1 huge scrum in the middle of the board. nobody can hold onto a ball for long. #bloodbowl
slann are always a threat - even with few players on the pitch

Peter managed to score vs. Philippe in the closing turns of the first half, putting us both 1-0 over our opponents.  Things are a little hazy now but I think I recall trying to stop him as well because I'd protected myself from getting scored on by Rob - but it could be the other way round and I helped him to score so Rob couldn't!

#db9g1 setup after 3 turns due to slann pulling off a crazy passing play #whutupshun ps. I still had the other ball
only 7 slann left standing, still 2-0 up
#db9g1 2 elf teams going sideways controlling the balls. necro team can't win, just failed another go for it #bloodbowl
Rob just couldn't get any rolls to go his way this game
#db9g1 slann pull off another insane passing play, bringing the ball all the way across the pitch #whutupshun
if I had counted better I could've pushed one more last turn and scored a third.

After the above pic, Peter managed to knock over my player (the ball scattered into the endzone) and put three tackle zones on the ball, he then pushed for his own touchdown and failed with a "go for it" (2+ with reroll).  I nearly made it 3 touchdowns on my last turn by leaping onto the ball but failed the 5+ pickup with a 2.  That was ok though because Peter failed to get a second touchdown by failing another "go for it" (2+ with reroll) which brought a mighty cheer to our table.
twice Peter failed 2+ with reroll for a 2nd touchdown to tie me for the table

So after game one, I won 2-0 tied on casualties and stayed on the top table to face Leathan (the eventual tournament winner) and his norse team (with 2 ST5 Ulfs and a MV9 Sure Hands, Sure Feet, Dodge runner!!)
