Got my FOLDIO!

Well it took a bit longer due to shipping to Canada being slower through USPS - but finally it has arrived and I love it! A very cool portable lightbox that folds together and uses magnets to hold it's shape and a thin LED strip to provide the light. It has multiple background colours too!

Here are just a couple teaser pics. I have begun taking some nicer photos of my figures and updating old posts using them. Check out the links below for some updated piccys!

Necromunda free for all!

Got my brother Sebastian and a couple other friends around to start getting ourselves back into necromunda (older necromunda batreps here).  Due to time we just had a huge free for all on a 4' x 4' table.  We decided to use table corners (basically you got a 12" square in each corner). Treacherous Conditions roll was 51 (Carrion Bats) which meant after setting up, every model had to take a Ld check or be pinned (possibly falling from ledges).  Lorand also started with a Ratskin scout who owed an honour debt to the enforcer sergeant from the event cards we got.

Lorand rolled highest and got to pick table corner first - he chose the corner with the power plant.  I'll apologize right now, I don't have many pics of Lorand's corner as it was a little awkward to get to being on the other side of the table (plus his minis weren't painted so it ruined the fantasy of it all  - LOL inside joke!) Here's a pic just to see his table corner but it's actually from much later in the game.
enforcer corner (after a couple turns unfortunately)
Sebastian picked next and setup in the corner with the necromunda building with the tall vent stack.
spyrer setup - sorry only pic and it was blurry
I setup in the emptiest corner but which was fairly close to the imperial firebase.
escher setup
Mike setup in the last corner with some of the octagonal and triangular necromunda scenery.
delaque setup (more are just behind that piece of card scenery)
We rolled to see who went first and decided it was just clockwise after that, Mike won the roll and I went last.  We did the Carrion Bats test before each person took their turn. The only one able to do anything other than move closer in the first turn was Mike (he pinned my juve with a shot).  Unfortunately for him, his heavy was the only model to fail it's Ld check, he then fell all the way to the ground from 6" up.  He outrageously survived completely unharmed as I rolled a 1 to wound.  Lorand had 2 enforcers pinned, Sebastian had 1 yeld pinned and I had 2 gangers and a juve pinned (same juve Mike pinned - lol).

Second turn, Mike's heavy ran back to position while the rest took 2 of my escher man down and missed or pinned while shooting the enforcers.  Lorand's enforcers began the smack down, his heavy taking an escher OOA and his sergeant capping a delaque juve with his plasma pistol.  Sebastian's spyrers manuvered around and a yeld took the enforcer heavy man down. I managed to pass my bottle test (seriously? bottle test turn 2!) put some girls on overwatch near the down girls and continued to consolidate my position.  Some pics from turn two below.
Mike: "stay there this time!" + 2 capped escher
enforcers shotguns pinned, the sergeants plasma pistol took the juve man down
yeld wasted the enforcer heavy
Turn three things started to get heated.  Mike's delaques were busy, taking the ratskin man down, pinning the enforcer leader and his heavy pilled the stubber rounds into the cyber mastiff - but Lorand made both 5+ saves and the cyber mutt shrugged it off.  The enforcers passed their bottle test, the mastiff charged a delaque - only to get beaten down in close combat, the sergeant stood up and capped another delaque, then both the heavy and ratskin went from man down to OOA (worst time for double 6's!)  At this point we are all going to be taking bottle tests every turn except for the Sebastian so I used my event card "unsafe ladder" on one of his yelds, causing just a S3 hit but it was enough to pin him and give him a flesh wound - damn so close! His malcadon charged the enforcers of whom one was on overwatch - again doing just enough to pin him and cause a flesh wound.  So Sebastian was still safe from bottle tests even though 2 spyrers had been hurt.  I passed my bottle test to have another pretty dismal turn, missing with my shooting, though 1 ganger did recover from man down to flesh wound - woo hoo, a temporary break in bottle tests for me!
delaque heavy opens up on the cyber-mastiff in the distance
Mike passed his bottle test to start turn four, and proceeded to waste Lorands sergeant, and a couple gangers recovered to flesh wounds.  Lorand made his bottle test having only 4 guys left, but failed twice to hit the pinned malcadon lying in front of him.  He had some dismal luck where his cyber mutt charged a delaque ganger and got scragged for it's trouble.  Then he lucked out as Sebastian failed to escape pinning with the malcadon, though he did charge and take out an enforcer with his S4 jakara.  His yeld then fired at another enforcer, missing - so Sebastian played his event card "toxic pipe", rolling 3 S4 automatic hits with NO armour save from the pipe that exploded above the enforcer.  He then rolled two 2's and a 1 to fail completely in wounding the enforcer, though he was pinned with no armour save available.  In my turn I finally got my first wounding hit of the game, with my juve taking down a delaque juve with her pistol at long range. Then before my CC phase was over, Mike used his event card "necromundan rat" to attack my shotgun ganger on overwatch.  We both fluffed out single attack dice roll (both 1's) so due to charging and it's insane WS of 4 (yes, a rat - WS4!) Mike got two hits on me, which failed to wound but did remove my overwatch.
cyber-mastiff charges but gets smoked in HtH
enforcers luck out that the malcadon didn't escape being pinned
Turn five Mike the wound machine (I think he had at least two gangers with 3 wounds caused each this game) though he only pinned the spyrers on the bridge fighting the enforcers, ran a shotgun ganger up and took a sneaky jakara man down.  Lorand passed his bottle test and continued his ineffective shooting by missing the pinned jakara right next to his enforcers (three 1's in a row!!). Game changed at this point as unfortunately for him, Sebastian failed the very first bottle test he had to make - brutal!!  My escher managed to wound another delaque with a shotgun blast in my turn, and my other ganger who'd been crawling along 2" man down all game recovered to a flesh wound.
escher have secured the firebase and a delaque gets taken down with a shotgun blast
Mike failed his bottle roll on turn 6, moving the turn quickly to Lorand who passed but failed to hit anyone.  My same shotgun ganger who smoked the delaque last turn did the same to another enforcer, causing the last enforcer to break and flee!  We called it a bottle and a day.  In the end the early damage Mike did to me made me play cautious allowing him to get to grips with Lorand a bit more, and my meltagun armed leader worried Sebastian enough he kind of left me alone.  It's funny the only person to actually finish the job and take one of my gangers OOA was Lorand who was setup in the far corner of the table away from me!
how the west (corner) was won!

Spyrers step by step.. or using washes the "wrong" way

I've always been a fan of washes. With the latest GW washes I've taken it a step further in many cases check out my Raptors space marines or my LOTR/WHFB orcs & goblins if you are interested in seeing more.

I've had a couple requests for step by step on my Spyrers, which I'd call more of a staining method than anything else.  I wanted a similar style to paint all my Spyrers but wanted the various "suits" to have an easily recognizable colour.  I decided to try stealing a technique I'd seen used in 'Eavy Metal by Mike McVey for painting horses.  This was basically a grey/black undercoat, with a heavy white drybrush and a couple coats of brown ink to stain it the correct colour.  It handled all the highlights and shadows, looked solid and above all seemed really easy!  I thought it would work well on the Spyrers due to all the texture to the models (armour plates, tubing, etc.)

Step 1: Basecoat
This will define the overall look of your finished mini.  I went with black & red mainly because I wanted my malcadons to be reminiscent of spider-man (and I'd chosen to use a blue wash for them)

Step 2: Drybrush
Here you can see I basically just drybrushed the entire model white.  It picks out all the detail, and looks like crap - until...

Step 3: Stain (aka wash) #1

Ta-da! You can see it starting to come together here with the first coat of purple wash.  The black takes on a purplish hue and the white is quite easily stained to a light purple colour.  I go quite heavy and literally just splash the wash all over (told you it was quick!)

Step 4: Stain #2

Here the effect has really come together.  Without close inspection you can't tell the highlights were originally white and drybrushed on, they end up looking quite natural since the wash is used (quite liberally!) all over it pulls all the colours of the model together with it's unique tone.

I usually like to do some small details with proper paints, I find instead of being glaringly obvious (the difference between the washed parts and painted parts) when used correctly it can really bring the mini to life and makes the staining method even less obvious.  For the Spyrers I painted their weapons silver with a black wash and painted their faces.

I hope this inspires you, be sure to let me know if you try out any crazy painting with washes techniques!

Week 34: Tristan - Necromunda... Spyrers

I do have some other pics to do a step by step if anyone is interested, but here is my second batch of Spyrers, doubling my initial gang size to ten!!  You can see pics of my first batch on my blog here.
Let me know if you wanna see the step by step photos.  I'd highly recommend the painting method used.  I took these five models from basecoated red and black to finished in about four hours. They look quite good for the amount of effort put in.

Must Finish Project #2..... FINISHED!!!

Back at the end of February I wrote a couple posts about some small-ish projects I hoped to complete this year.  I'm happy to say trying to get some necromunda organized and get my brother involved in the hobby again has gotten me quite motivated.  Over the weekend and today the rest of the MFP #2 - my spyrers - have been painted and based.
Sorry for the weak photo, but it's getting late.  This batch gives me two of the jakara, malcadon and orrus suits, as well as four yeld suits. It's pretty insane to have a collection of 10 spyrers considering it's about twice as many as I'll ever need, but the paint scheme I chose is so easy finishing them up was a breeze.

Next up, some posts about the necromunda campaign as well as some more pit slave posts.

MFP (must finish project) #2

Another smaller project I really feel I need to finish this year is my Spyrers. Last year I got my gang of five completed - but nothing's ever "finished" is it? My buddy Mike then gave me a couple jakara's and some yeld wings, and the expansion began. I converted one of the jakara's into a yeld and then figured I should try and get at least two of each, and use up the last extra set of wings. So I got myself the other sculpts for the orrus & yeld, and another malcadon who I'm also planning to convert into a yeld.

So I currently have just 5 models to get painted to take this gang back to 100% (until of course I decide I need to find/convert patriarch & matriarch models)

random stuff

Well I've had a look through and the pics from the last necromunda game from last weekend aren't really worth putting together. There's a bunch of the same pic as Norah my jakara stood around while Mike's gang moved into position. He managed to free his captured leader and my Spyrers bottled. Here's a pic of Norah standing guard over his leader after my deployment (I had about 4 pics of this from various angles and not much else).

Next up is some work I've been doing on getting my Vindicator bits magnetized and ready to be undercoated. I have the hobby room this weekend but forgot to stock up on paint so getting them primed will probably be delayed.

Finally, I figured I should get this model varnished to protect her, as she is fully painted (trying to get all my painted stuff protected) - it's the limited edition Bonnie Annerson bounty hunter from Necromunda. I won her at a necro tournament in the first GW Toronto (when it was on Queen St.)

Necromunda batrep 4

We had to add more bridges to the terrain after we rolled the "Pit of Despair" as the treacherous terrain (pass a str test to move 2" or die on ground). We ruled it would cause an automatic serious injury instead of kill outright. We also used the necromunda event cards, I think Mike's gave him some credits or something at the end of the game, can't remember what mine was.Delaque deployment. Mike hired a "shooter" from the Anthony Case rules and deployed him with a juve & his autogunner. The rest of his models were in the power plant.
Spyrer deployment, I lined up my guys to take full advantage of their speed and skills.
Turn 1
Delaques rush the middle, no shooting - heavy sets overwatch.
Spyrers make a move to grab covering positions, while Reginald rushes the loot counter and gets nailed man down by the overwatching heavy stubber.
Turn 2
Delaques rush the loot counter closest to them, group with the shooter tries to take out Ferdinand, but fail to cause damage.
Gilbert the orrus moved up to pick up a loot counter and shot at the delaque vanguard group and missed. Ferdinand raced up to the platform with the loot counter closest to the delaques and hosed Mike's leader with his webber. Failing his initiative test his leader falls into the muck. Reginald goes out of action.

Turn 3
The delaque manuver themselves and blast away at Ferdinand. Knocking him off the ledge and into the muck. His leader fails his str test to succumb to the muck.

Norah the jakara charges one of the delaque vanguard while the Orrus takes a pot shot at the remaining vanguard.
Turn 4
The remaining delaques push forwards to try and protect the remaining gangers in the scrum for loot. Their shooting is largely ineffective.
Ferdinand makes his str test and reaches a ladder. Gilbert the orrus moves behind a doorway for protection and shoots at the delaque scroungers, failing to wound but again causing the ganger to fall from the edge and into the muck. Norah takes out her opponent in hth.
Turn 5
Delaques fail their bottle test.

I have a few more shots from our last game (another rescue mission as Mike's leader got captured)

Any feedback on these? Is maybe more detail enough to make them interesting or will it take maps?? :P

New Spyrers

Well, my completed Spyrers are now incomplete, thanks to my buddy Mike providing a couple jakaras and two pairs of yeld wings. :) I decided since there are only two sculpts I would convert the jakara I had already painted a version of into a yeld.

I cut off the monomolecular sword and pinned a laspistol to the wrist, then pinned the yeld wings to her back. It was pretty simple and looks pretty decent. I guess I now need a second Orrus at least!

Necromunda batrep 3

Here's the pics from my first game with Mike this afternoon. He decided upon reflection he really needed to try and rescue the ganger I captured (both because he needed gangers and to not give me a free kill towards a vow). I was fortunate for my # of defenders roll and got 4 Spyrers to defend. I left the Maximillian the yeld off as reinforcements since he has the most experience.

On a side note, being a nice guy - Mike has gifted me a couple jakara and a couple pairs of yeld wings. I'm already converting the duplicate model to be a yeld with a laspistol in place of her sword and a pair of the wings. Thanks Mike!!!

I basically setup with all my spyrers below the trussed up captive. We forgot to try the treacherous conditions table again until the second game (will post later).

Spyrer deploymentDelaques providing covering fire
Delaques sneaking up
Spyrers are fortunate with randomized movement. We forgot to randomize facing.
Delaque with head wound stands around doing nothing for a turn.
The delaques advance, 2 using hip shooting

Delaques charge Reginald. The first guy ties on combat score, the second gets 5 hits, of which 4 wound. "Save that!" says Mike...
WOOOOHOOOO!
Reginald takes one down - one to go.
Ferdinand goes to hide by captive, Norah & Gilbert each mince a Delaque (including the leader), the Delaques bottle. The captive is killed so I'm back up to 3 kills by game 3.
The Spyrers have been getting excellent boosts, though I think next time I start a Spyrer gang, Mike will have a better handle on how to deal with them. I think one more afternoon of gaming will have given plenty of play-testing of Anthony Case's Spyrer rules and then we might restart with new gangs. I'll probably try out my Escher while I get a couple more Spyrer's painted (to them test out a different house or two) while Mike is planning to try Anthony's new house weapon rules. Hopefully we can get another person or two to start playing with us on a semi-frequent basis.
